As mentioned its main purpose was interchange between north-south and east-west services. In later years it would have become largely redundant when more and more London trains were routed via Derby or Nottingham instead of the direct route via Trent and Toton, and local services on that route were withdrawn.

Great link. I love local articles like this. I like the design of the station but even if the station had survived you can imagine it would have been simplified by BR - possibly just a bus shelter on an island!
