I'm for it, and you should give up your seat since there older than you and will struggle to stand, the same as if theres a little toddler you ought to give it up. Free travel is necersary as pensions don't go a long way, pity you don't live around my area with Trent Barton busses, quite expensive IMO but tere services are good, and they are'nt too over crowded.

Why not add the average value of travel costs for a given area to the state pension based on a discount so pensioners are less likely to travel for the sake of it yet still effectively don't have to pay and the ones who don't can use the money for whatever they feel fit and it'l be means tested

i thought under 5s only travelled free if not occupying a seat and that they are meant to travel on parents (or whoevers) laps?

Yes, but it is 1 of those rules that is never enfoced, the same on the railways, only with bags & U5's included

On trains, they are allowed to occupy a seat, but not if it is required by a fare-paying passenger. The National Conditions of Carriage states:

Up to two children under five years of age may accompany each fare-paying passenger free of charge. However, children under five years of age who are travelling free may only occupy a seat which is not required by a fare-paying passenger.

But your not gunna go up to their perant and ask if they are under 5 and if they are please can you move the child?
