Im currently moving house, and have found a good one but it backs on to the GOBLIN (specifically between Harringay Green Lanes and Crouch Hill). Im concerned about freight rail frequency & times - does anyone know where I could get info on this? I've tried calling Network Rail but they weren't able to give me much information

Freight trains run throughout the night.

The times they pass will vary by day of the week, customer requirements and the timetable. Also freight/engineering trains often run early or late compared to their booked times.

Here is a link to the freight schedule for overnight last Wednesday at Harringay Park Jn - looks like 20 trains scheduled but only 3 ran. (Those marked Q & cancel - did not run).

The line there is pretty much shielded by trees, and (except right at the Green Lanes end) in a cutting. The late-Victorian houses have large gardens. I would think you wouldn't even notice the freight trains passing. In a few months' time the frequent diesel passenger trains will change over to electric so that noise will go away as well.

Once the line is electrified I think it is also likely that absolute numbers of freight trains will increase, because there are electric freight trains that they currently have to run on the NLL - and that's where they want to run more passenger services and where the greater capacity issues are.

Thanks! That's really helpful - I'm looking specifically at the Gospel Oak - Barking Overground line as that runs at the end of the back garden (think the line from Kings X is far enough away so it wouldn't be a problem). When I look at Harringay Green lanes a few say "N/R" - does that mean it's on non-runner (or similar)? Sorry for the basic Qs!!

I live above Crouch Hill station, the passing trains at night really don't make much noise. We used to get trains stopped at the station( or nearby signals) for long periods, in which case the throb of the engines could keep you awake, if something else wakes you up.

Well I've learnt something. In my experience I have never seen that, but can see it is perfectly possible.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y60131/2017/04/18/advanced is a good example of that. Instead of going on the long and winding route from Doncaster to Leeds, it would have direct via Wakefield Westgate and so missed out all the timing points.

(As an aside, getting into the terminus 56 minutes early must be a rarity for a passenger service)
