What work does heavy haul have out of dagenham

Also heavy haul is surely involved with engineering possessions which are widespread at the moment

Dagenham work is best described by those working for FLHH.

Coal isn't the be-all and end-all (Network Rail contracts dwarf coal transport in value and probably tonnage too) but if your company and specifically your depot rely on coal then you really have to hope for a decent management plan to make use of the spare drivers and redundant vehicles.

DBS are the preferred bidder for coal into Drax and that is bound to cause concern for FLHH drivers and ground staff in the Aire Valley - no coal into Drax, not a sniff of biomass and questions being asked over the longevity of (the smaller) Eggborough and Ferrybridge C plants (there's serious talk of Ferrybridge burning waste material rather than coal - I suppose there's opportunities there).

I'm sure things will be fine for those of you already going through the recruitment procedures but I see a lean time for future recruitment in the near future.

A large chunk of the engineering work is based up north, and will be for some time. I ain't entirely sure as to why HH are not interested in biomass work, are they just wanting the hobc contracts, must be reasons behind it, is the bio all that it's made up to be ? Time will tell. But if certain depots work is coal based then it's quite worrying.

HH would have bid for biomass, but will have been beaten on price, years ago HH won work on the back of service quality. But now it's pure lowest cost!

Hi all, I notice that Freightliner are advertising the driver graduate scheme again today. It sounds like it is for intermodal from the description, can anyone confirm or deny this, or have any knowledge about which depots and what they are looking for?

What kind of test is it that you do during the application ?

Mechanical aptitiude /physics logical thinking (sequences) and spatial awareness none of the questions are as hard as they look but I admit they can look a little scary at first glance

I think you will find that the interview is for Freightliner Intermodal, rather than Heavy Haul. I've applied for both and i'm awaiting a medical for Heavy Haul. Intermodal are using telephone interviews, something that Heavy Haul did not use.

Yes I think this is the Heavy Haul thread not Intermodal

More bad news for FLHH is that Ferrybridge C power station is to stop supplying power to the national grid in March 2016.

This will mean another lost contract for them (and also DBS & GBRf).

Hi, I know someone at freightliner, he's not worked a shift since start of April, since the downturn in coal traffic around the Yorkshire power stations, they stocked up before the new charges for coal by rail came into force, just get's payed basic hours for staying at home. So don't expect too much on the job front until things pick up.

It's not a charge for coal by rail, it's the 'carbon floor price' (carbon tax)that more than doubled from April 1st that is making coal fired generation uncompetitive with gas generation. It is this that led to the decision to close Ferrybridge C earlier than expected.
In Northern England I very much doubt there will be any more recruitment and I hate to say it but there is possibility of redundancies in the coming years.
Most Drivers are averaging 2 or 3 day weeks, there's nobody that hasn't worked any shifts since April, it just feels like it!

Maybe the 'no shifts since April' is pushing it a bit but I know several drivers from more than one company who have averaged nowhere near 2-3 days a week since March!

A good time for middle managers to catch up on frontline staff training, route learning and safety/company briefs - if nothing else, it deducts another 8 hours or so from the contact ;)

Approaching 30 years in this game and I've never, ever seen so many empty sets sitting around in sidings doing nothing.
Not just FLHH either...

I must agree, bit worrying to say the least. Doesn't look like I'll/we'll be getting on driving till things pick up. Hopefully it will.

According to a FLHH trainee driver, the next training course is going to be December.

Will wait and see.

Although FLHH may want new drivers (maybe take in ex DBS), for the flow that have rumoured to have won from DBS, out of Tunstead.

Regards
Darryl

I Worte off my chances months ago... what a waste of a private medical which I passed last August and had no explanation as to why I had not been taken on when others on here were. I still have FGW on hold so we will wait and see and in the short term I will now look forward to my holiday next month
