Hi All,

I'm thinking of having a long weekend in Bavaria in November. Friday in Munich and Saturday / Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to do the rack railway. I'd probably arrive in Garmisch around 12 on the Saturday, and stay until 2 on the Sunday before heading back to Munich.

I want to do the rack and a cable car or two. Have any of you been? Any tips / advice appreciated.

There will be two of us travelling, can we get a group ticket from Munich to Garmisch and back?

Cheers!

Tickets to Garmisch i do know about the other bits not, i just ate and drank while visiting Garmisch for the day.

There is something called a Bayern Ticket. I believe it is 23 Euro and then 5 Euro extra per person. It is valid on all local and regional trains (not the ICE that occasionally go to Garmisch) in the whole of Bavaria.

Details here. http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm

Currently (until sometime next year, I think) the Eibsee - Zugspitz cable car is closed and being replaced by a new one. Also, the Zugspitz summit is a bit of a building site. See the web cam at https://zugspitze.panomax.com/.

As an alternative I can recommend the Wankbahn (who sniggered?) which provides some excellent views, is cheaper, much less busy and is a good alternative when the Zugspitz lost in cloud. (https://****.panomax.com/)
There's a bus to the valley station but the walk there is pleasant enough. Look for Wallfahrtskirche Sankt Anton on Google Maps, the path starts near there.

The Wankbahn is great. We went cause' of the name, had a great day. Nothing better than a 'sunny mountain ****' in the Wankhaus.

Cheers mate, looked like a great trip.

Yes, it was good fun.
The more traditional parts of G-P are on the Garmisch side (west of the railway), including a pedestrianised zone with pubs and restaurants, plus a park, while Partenkirchen is a bit more modern.
Useful supermarket (Aldi or Lidl) just on the W side of the station if you're looking to top up with portable food, but worth checking opening times particularly at the weekend.
I stayed at the Gästehaus Brigitte bed & breakfast, which was fine.

Do the line via Reutte to Kempten on one trip from or to Munich. Goes through Austria but DB units. Covered by the Bayern Ticket IIRC.

You must always change in Reutte in Tirol for the Kempten - Garmisch line.
