Indeed. ;)

Of these: Portillo is fairly neutral these days I guess? Comes across OK on his railway series, at least. Arlene Foster might at least have something useful to say about the impact of Brexit on the Northern Ireland situation, I guess, even though I generally disagree with the DUP's outlook on life. Farage, McVey and Rees-Mogg... nuff said. But I've got no idea who Phillip Davies, Mark Steyn, Camilla Tominey and Andrew Pierce even are! ;)

Davies - MP for Shipley, aka Mr McVey
Tominey - associate editor of the Telegraph
Pierce - columnist on the Mail (I've read some of his articles, its the right place for him)

Steyn - I only know by reputation; I do know he's filled in for Tucker Carlson on Fox.

Foster - NI yes, but formerly DUP

Thanks for that. Didn't realise McVey had an MP husband and didn't realise Foster was no longer in the DUP!

Foster is a non-affiliated peer; I don't suppose the DUP have a block in the Lords, (I should have said ex DUP MLA,; for what it is worth Wikipedia has her of no political party, given the nature of her removal from power, I not surprised). Still right wing though.

The McVeys - they deserve each other!

Just looked at Davies' Wikipedia (yes, I know) page. The intro says it all.

"He is also an organiser for the TaxPayers' Alliance. Davies has regularly been criticised by other politicians and prominent public figures[11] for comments he has made on gender equality and women,[12] homosexuality,[13] ethnic minorities,[14] as well as the disabled.[15] He has stated that the disabled should have the option of working for less than the minimum wage.[16][17] Davies has said that white, male ministers risk being "hoofed out" of the government to make way for women or minority ethnic MPs.[18]"

Also: " He has called for government to "scrap the Human Rights Act for foreign nationals and chuck them out of the country"[46] and in 2016 expressed admiration for Donald Trump."

And: "Over the last few months Davies has filibustered legislation to stop rogue landlords evicting tenants asking for basic repairs." (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...er-and-friend-to-rogue-landlords-9924580.html)

Nuff said, really. I guess Shipley must be socio-economically radically different to neighbouring Leeds and Bradford who appear to want nothing to do with the Tories full stop, let alone a right-winger like Davies.

Saw an advert last night, confirming Jacob Rees-Mogg’s new show, called “State of the Nation” starts on Monday. It will be in Mark Steyn’s old slot at 20.00-21.00 Monday to Thursday.

Anyone finding it funny that Mark Steyn is now going full-on attack mode on GB News. He's clearly taken things VERY personally and is spending his life seeking to bring the channel down (like it needs anyone's help!).

It’s a bit of an odd constituency - whilst Shipley itself is far from salubrious, the seat also contains the well-heeled outskirts of Ilkley and Otley

I watched Jacob‘s first show and am currently watching tonight’s show. Overall, I have enjoyed it so far - Jacob takes to presenting very well (he has of course had broadcasting experience in the past with LBC) and he clearly shows a good understanding of the topics. Obviously it’s a very different show to Mark Steyn - I doubt there will be much discussion relating to vaccines, but I do think the show is a worthy replacement.

For anyone interested, Monday’s viewing figures were as follows:-
Jacob Rees-Mogg made his big debut on GB News last night, going head-to-head with Piers Morgan at 8pm. How did he do? Guido has the overnight BARB figures…

Jacob took in an average of 79,200 viewers for the hour. Piers, meanwhile, took in a mere 35,300. More than doubling Morgan’s average throughout the show.

Those numbers, for both Jacob and Piers, are terrible. Both channels are desperately restructuring but I can't see how either can survive as is.

How many of those watching Rees-Mogg are only doing so out of curiosity or because they are hoping to see a freak show? It is what the figures settle down to and how soon they do that matter.

I didn’t catch it live but I did watch the first part of it on the GBNews YouTube channel. Found it quite enjoyable although didn’t make me laugh as much as Mark Steyn, although it’s a lot more sensible programme. Going by the comments on the video it’s been quite well received.

I'll be surprised if either of these channels stay around for the long haul. They have to be both bleeding money, and neither of them are doing very much on YouTube or social media these days.

I will say though: I wouldn't object to Rees-Mogg having a comparable show on the BBC. He's such an odd figure that he belongs on public broadcasting, he's a surprisingly good interviewer from what I've seen as he lets guests talk while asking good questions, and I really like the fact that he's not trying desperately with the LOOK ME I AM THE HOST that so many others (including most personalities on GB News) do.

Surprisingly for me, Rees-Mogg also seems to be very good at explaining things to viewers. He's not coming across as preachy and condescending but rather informative.

Anyone finding it funny that Mark Steyn is now going full-on attack mode on GB News. He's clearly taken things VERY personally and is spending his life seeking to bring the channel down (like it needs anyone's help!).

Not much of a surprise at all. He's lost his media outlet, and there doesn't seem to be anyone willing to give him a replacement.

I don't think he'll do much in terms of viewing figures, because he's coming across as being rather like someone's Thatcherite dad who earnt a fortune from the stock market. He's not saying controversial rubbish for the sake of views, and his interviewing style is remarkably calm and laid back. They won't be able to do JACOB MASSACRES LIBERALS type videos with him, and so he's not going to attract the type of person who regards Neil Oliver as a guru.

I'm going to really stick my neck out here and say that he belongs on the BBC with this type of show. I'd actually really like to see him interview people like the Sinn Fein leadership, because I think he's a surprisingly good interviewer.

The test of a good interviewer comes when they have to interview someone who they are basically in sympathy with, but who has done something that they really ought to be grilled about. All personal goodwill must be put aside and they must represent the viewer/the public good and put the guest through it. Andrew Neil, for all that I personally dislike him, would do this and there are others who will do the same. However, there are plenty of generally good interviewers who will produce no more than a few soft lobs or token difficult questions, and won’t follow up inconsistencies and evasions in the answers. There is also the possibility that only guests who they want to show up, because they are of an opposing group, will be asked on, but people who really ought to be questioned, but are seen as one of us, won’t be invited so as to avoid possible embarrassments for host or guest, or both.

Yes, this was what caught my eye with Rees-Mogg, because he asked a very tough question to Ian Paisley Jr, specifically about the role of the King in the Windsor Agreement.

I've taken to skimming through his shows, and he said one thing yesterday that caught my eye: that while he's not personally bothered about being out of step with the UK's allies when it comes to repatriating people involved with terror (in relation to the Shamima Begum case), he also thinks that British citizens should be imprisoned in Britain if they've committed a crime rather than being left abroad.

All in all, I have to say that he's well worth a watch, even if you're completely against his politics. It also seems to be blissfully free of JACOB DESTROYS WOKE LESBIAN TEACHERS type nonsense, although Kelvin MacKenzie was a horrible guest and out of touch with the rest of the show. I am truly astonished by how courteous Rees-Mogg is being towards people who are ideologically opposite to him, and he isn't trying to score political points as well.

Ridiculous. I could actually see myself making a habit out of skim-watching his show.

Surely that depends on what the products are? Yes, I'd agree that the adverts GB News run for smart meters, and the NHS adverts with lots of people in masks, aren't likely to be looked on too favourably by the typical Neil Oliver viewer. But in the end I suspect very few people really care whether someone advertises on GB News or not, and the few that do care enough to change their purchasing habits accordingly, may well be equalled or outweighed by those who look more favourably on their products precisely because they do advertise there. Or perhaps not, but I'm not sure it is quite so clear-cut as people assume.
GB News’ viewership is skewed towards low-information, lower-income males, a disproportionate number of whom will be single and have low-impact lives. Many won’t be heavy consumers. Have a look at the absolute brain rot in their YouTube comments. These people don’t attract high paying advertisers.

I’ve not watched Rees Mogg but for all his very many obvious faults he does seem to be intellectually honest, as well as someone who’d give you the time of day if you bumped into him in the street.

I can't find any information on the internet about the demographic breakdown of GBNews viewers at all. Do you have some data on this, or are you guessing? It doesn't match my anecdotal experience, either from real life or from the posters discussing it in this thread.

Have a look at the absolute brain rot in their YouTube comments.

Surely that applies to pretty much all youtube comments on anything at all vaguely political? I don't believe many conclusions can be drawn from that.

Another change to the morning schedule - 'Bev Turner Today' is now 'To The Point' with Andrew Pierce and Bev Turner. The new show has also absorbed Tom Harwoods slot at 9:30.

Ugh. I like Bev Turner but Andrew Pierce is beyond the pale for me (and you'd think for Bev Turner too!) given his views on covid restrictions.

Not that I'd be watching either way at that time of the day, but still this doesn't seem a remotely good move.

Yes, I have to say this was quite a surprise - there was no prior announcement and I note that Turner's twitter page still shows an advert for her previous show.

I think that “On The Point” worked because of the nature of the two presenters. Not sure putting these together will have the same feel, other than to perhaps calm Bev Turner down.

Ofcom finds the Mark Steyn programme on GB News in breach of broadcasting rules
In this case, our investigation found that an episode of the Mark Steyn programme fell short of these standards – not because it exercised its editorial freedom to challenge mainstream narratives around Covid-19 vaccination – but because, in doing so, it presented a materially misleading interpretation of official data without sufficient challenge or counterweight, risking harm to viewers.

I remember watching this particular program and I recall thinking at the time that Steyn was being rather cavalier in his interpretation of the figures (figures from the UKHSA surveillance reports - they were discussed in the covid subforum here at the time). I really wanted people on 'my side' of the argument to be putting forward bulletproof facts, because I thought we really ought to be doing better than the nonsense that was coming from the 'other side'.

Worth pointing out he then had Jamie Jenkins on his show (for the first time I think) a few days later to point out where he was glossing over data and over-reaching in his conclusions.

However, if we're going to criticise Steyn over this, there are all manner of 'pro-narrative' pronouncements from presenters, politicians and commentators over the past three years that have been utter nonsense and should be equally culpable. If Ofcom are to have any role at all in regulating what can be said on TV, they ought to be impartial and treat nonsense said 'in support' of a government-supported narrative in the exact same way as they treat nonsense said 'against' that narrative. As it is, this does seem the most incredible double-standard.

Nigel Nelson from the Sunday Mirror, and Lee Anderson MP are both to join the channel. It isn’t stated what they will be doing.

Nigel is a regular panelist on various programmes, and Lee also regularly appears as an interviewee.

Rees-Mogg does seem to be much better as a presenter than I was expecting - but I'm really not convinced that becoming a home for vast numbers of sitting Tory MPs is the direction GB News ought to be going.

It's an attempt to distract people from the issues affecting most people (food, energy and other bills) and make them think it's all down to immigrants and Meghan Markle.

Of course, when the election is announced I can't see how any of them will be able to talk about anything as there are very strict rules on broadcasting then. Not that I expect GB News will care and will push the boundaries, or break the rules and worry about the repercussions later (given the speed Ofcom operates at, that could be ages).

I suspect it's coming from a worry that Talk TV will poach them if they don't get there first.

Well, they do frequently cover the 'cost of living' crisis, indeed often calling it the 'cost of lockdown' crisis, and I think they deserve a reasonable amount of credit for reminding us that many/most of the current issues are largely due to our ludicrous response to covid. Most other media continue to pretend the two things are totally unrelated.

Of course, when the election is announced I can't see how any of them will be able to talk about anything as there are very strict rules on broadcasting then.

You do have to wonder if they've considered that, it is a very good point.

If someone such as Lee "30p" Anderson gets a platform on GeeBeeBees, so be it; it's not as if it will be be seen by the majority of the sane population of the country. Unfortunately, his dog-whistling is being heard by the more unhinged far-right elements of our population and they're being emboldened as a result.
