Anyone on here able to expand on the role of an "assistant train manager/shunter" at Peterborough please:

What are the typical shift patterns?
Is there a lot of overtime available? If you want extra overtime can you volunteer at other depots?
What's the general state of gbrailfreight at the moment- the changing face of freight has made rd and cs worse and redundancies commonplace - does the depot at Peterborough have a long term future?
Does this position normally lead to promotion to driver? If so, what is the general timescale?

Shift Pattens: Start at any point on the clock face and can work up to 12 hours shift. Ignore the "normal 35 hour week" bull crap as most weeks you will probably work 45-50+. The 35 hour week just has to average out over a 16 week period.

Overtime is available but its flat rate. You cannot offer to do overtime specifically at other depots but some jobs are cross covered which means some jobs can be covered by multiple depots if needed.

Redundancies are rare at GBRF. We had a hand full a couple of years ago when the steel went belly up but GB have done a good job of weathering the freight storms. Peterborough should be good for a good few years as this is GBs main maintenance facility in that area. However this is freight so anything goes.

ATM can and does lead to drivers positions. But expect to wait any where between 2 and 5+ years. Depends on the state of the business and what work is expecting to come up.

Say goodbye to a social life though.

Thanks for that, a couple more then if I may:

Presumably you work to a link (16 week?) so you know your book on time (apart from spares) well in advance, or is it more like the DB floating booking on times that was detailed in a thread recently?

How many atm's are based at Peterborough? How many drivers?

Is annual leave part of the link and what is the allocation?

I'm trying to work out where an ATM is in comparison with other railway grades? Would it be comparible to say a commercial train manager at a toc? If you had the choice of either role, which would you choose?

Location
Somewhere
Currently there are 7 ATMs in one link and about 13 drivers in one link.

You will know your rest days in advance but you won't know what your booking on time, shift length or job is untill the roster comes out on a Thursday evening for the following week. Diagrams come out on a Friday night for the following week. Theres also daily rosters you have to check to make sure your booked job hasn't been altered or changed.

ATM is purely a shunter. Van to a location prep train, uncouple locos/wagons, pull points etc etc. If you progress up to ATMP or ATME you may have an element of driving within yards and engineering possessions respectively.
