On the approach to Glasgow Central (before the bridge, at a fork) there's a grey building with a sign that says 'Welcome to Glasgow Central'. Part of it looks like a bit of an ATC tower.

Is this building used (or still used) for anything to do with the railways?

Its the former Glasgow Central Signal box, disused since the transfer to West of Scotland but the basement still contains equipment including the pumps for the air point system.

As others have noted it was a signalling centre, it opened on the 2nd January 1961 replacing 4 signal boxes and closed on the 27th December 2008.

Just to add that it had a major upgrade in the early 70s as part of the extension of the WCML electrification from Weaver Junction to Glasgow. The 1961 ocs panel was replaced with an NX panel and the control area greatly extended.

Forgot about that, I think Motherwell was similarly upgraded?
