When used as DC only units how much different are they for drivers, guards and fitters from class 455s (just wondering if 1 + a spare would be suitable for SWT for the Lyminton branch - the acceleration and top speed of either 159s or 450s is probably very serious overkill for what the Lymington branch needs)

Different motors, different control systems- they're entirely different trains. Don't be fooled by some of the 455s having a 508 trailer, as that is just what that is, a trailer, without any of the important stuff.

Oh dear, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mention the Lymington branch... Seeing as they were built as inner suburban units, Class 313 acceleration isn't exactly poor in comparison. Acceleration of the Class 450 is pretty much overkill for the entire DC network anyway!

No TOC wants a micro fleet of two completely different units to those generally used in the local area. It causes problems for maintenance, spares, training and crewing.

As provision of a 158 or a 450 is not a problem to solve, there's no point in thinking about a 313, or even a 455 or 456.
