Had my first go on a GSMR radio a couple of days ago and I have to say it is very very good. The only problem currently is there are no covers on the red button. Apart from that cant fault them!

They are extremelly good on what we had before (NRN/CSR). I have been unlucky enough to have used both the red & yellow for genuine reasons. Must say my only gripe is having to remember to keep using the orange handset button on red and the echo that occurs then. Very off-putting.

We haven't started GSMR training yet, that's scheduled for our next round of safety days.

We've had quite a few problems (LM) with drivers unfamiliar with the new system having difficulties "keying into" and setting it up correctly, causing a few noteable delays, but I suppose that this is just a teething problem that will be overcome in time - I hope so, anyway.

Indeed the CSR is a pain at times. The problem we have all had is that our training day was last March! So we have all had to have refreshers on it. I do like the phone book idea, the only think I dont like is the fact the red button doesnt have a cover over it and you cant cancel it if you press if by mistake. I have a feeling that parts of the network are going to be brought to a stand by accidental Emergency group calls.

Has anyone had a "text" from the siggy yet?

I agree the GSM-R is a fantistic piece of kit. The clarity of the call is exceptional. One morning where my train was due out the depot and there was massive disruption I was able to speak to the shunter, and control all through the unit, placing one on hold whilst speaking to the other as a pose to to digging out my mobile. Having a flick through the phonebook we have some very odd numbers in there though. Edinburgh PSB was quite a funny one, considering we are in the south eastern region!

Ive had a text from the signaller asking me to contact him at the next station as he had a problem making the call for some reason, much better than a general call which everyone can hear and repeats 3 times!

Fabulous piece of equipment, the only fault is the Emergency Group Call that spans 3 radio sectors and in turn within a congested areas can cause problems and confusion, the original rules have changed but this feature will cause some heavy delays in the future.

Indeed the new rules regarding restarting after the emergency group call are much better.
