I’m just wondering if this is permitted. I’ve never seen it before.

Try again. In short no, it's not.
Yes of course it is. Why would it not be?I’m just wondering if this is permitted. I’ve never seen it before.

You're half right, it's not permitted whilst performing safety critical duties, ie dispatch, driving, moving on or near the line. But there is no general ban. Company policies may differ however.I was always under the impression that the use of personal electronic devices for entertainment purposes was not allowed for on-duty traincrew, because you might not hear something important or be distracted from your job. Is it just drivers, then?
What risk to their job?Rave music.... really?? Why would a guard risk their job in such a pointless way? Not buying it I'm afraid, unless it was their ring tone or something.

Some genuinely concentrate better with music on. Reduces distractions and improves focus. Also helps some people who are on the autistic spectrum to function. I’d not be so quick to condemn ...
I would agree if it wasnt for all the alarms in the cab that you need to hear and react to.That is very true, and I have wondered if music should actually be permitted for drivers. After all, it's said to improve concentration on the road for car drivers provided they aren't pratting with it while driving - but it is a very different situation, of course.
There are only so many revenue checks you can do and sometimes nobody needs help. Being a visible presence doesn't mean literally walking up and down constantly.Very unprofessional IMHO. Surely the guard should be doing revenue checks/customer service duties throughout the train?

I think it's probably a good idea to ensure that anything like that can't be heard outside of the cab but that's because I think it's good etiquette just as it is for passengers not to do it in the saloon rather than some issue related to performance of duties!

The honourable gentleman for Redcar does make a good point however it can be easy to forget how thin the cab walls can be.
