Can't give a date on 217. 232 will stay as spare until refurb program complete before going off-lease, again no date. Anticipate many problems uncovered when first "lounge car" arrives !!

Last blue coach RFMB 10232 has gone into set. Tonights up (Thurs). 602 on depot this week for fitter training.

For anyone interested 10232, the last (day) coach in blue / dynamic lines, arrived at Penzance this morning on 1C99.

No posts yet on fun and games with 1C99 last night. Terminated Plymouth due brake fault, loco 57602. and went forward as 5C99 at 09+12 to Long Rock. This afternoon 57603 ran as 0Z79 1312 LE Old Oak Common to Penzance, presumably for 1A40 tonight (routed via Bristol) but has turned back at Didcot and sitting at Reading.

The set was sent onwards from Plymouth empty, however I believe failed again and was placed in the sidings at Par.

The challenge is that if they wait, CAF won't be as willing to produce a micro-fleet of only a dozen or so carriages for a reasonable price. It's vital for the future of the service that its stock replacement cycle is aligned with the Caledonian Sleeper. FirstGroup and Arriva had planned to refurbish the Mk3s along the lines of the Night Riviera stock and it must have taken them by surprise to see Serco come in with a new-build option. (Maybe that surprise was what drove FirstGroup to go for new build for TPE rather than loco hauled 442s like the others...?) The new franchise would be let in exactly the right time for CAF to produce a follow-on order.

Maybe thats the plan, upgrade the sleeper service for now to keep it going, then when the new franchise comes along in 2020, promise to buy a new fleet for the Night Riviera as a way of winning the franchise. To be honest, as much as I like the new style First Group, they are going to have to really put their money where their mouth is if the want to keep the GWR franchise, now that they will be getting South Western Railway and all the improved they have made to GWR and will be, it seems hard to improve the trains/passenger experience more, the only issue I see is infrastructure going forward, especially in Devon/Cornwall.

Would there be any mileage in having the Night Riviera as a separate franchise, albeit a very small one?

It was discussed in a very small way by Dft during last but one GW franchise option when it was thinking about splitting Scotrail but decided against it. Not even mentioned for current one and yes, we expect a new vehicle requirement for next long term franchise..... .

At the risk of going far off topic - there was at one stage a suggestion of splitting the Berks and Hants 'far South West' InterCity services, the Night Riviera and the Devon and Cornwall branches into a separate franchise to more readily enable devolution to the Authorities of the South West.

Sorry for the ignorance Paul, have I missed something? Wasn't 10232 rusty beyond economic repair? Has another taken its place and assumed its number?

10232 is too rusty to be refurbished but fine for service in the meantime, it will be withdrawn when its replacement turns up.

I can tell you what on board staff think and fitters and especially the train prep team..... !!! Mattresses are soon to be replaced due to poor quality for a start. Various comments on this thread and other forums.

Incidently, 10232 is also a different batch to other RFMBs in fleet with different buffet corridor and toilet. Bespoke parts would be required to refurbish it, costing more. Plus the rot !

All ran fairly well then. Although I see 2E75 was sat at Lipson for 20mins.

Recently refurbished sleeping car 10589 in the formation of the "down" Paddington - Penzance sleeper this morning, albeit locked out of use.

Twice in the last week a pair of 57s have worked down on 1C99. Any info, please, or is it for Maintenance training.

Somebody broke the brake pipe London end wed/thurs last week so TnT for brake force and for sunday down, A coach removed so guard in RFMB and resulting seat capacity reduction. Currently no spare as one other still has parking brake problems awaiting spares.
10589 "should" be ready for thursday up. Long term depot train preperation staffing problems may mean quality not to usual standard either !
