Noted in the design posted above that there doesn't look to be much canopy cover for Dore Station
Canopies- another area of neglect of customers' needs? They can be difficult (and thus), expensive to maintain, (just look at some of the lovely decorative Victorian glass wonders) hence the cutting back for a long time to 'bus shelters'. With the use of realtime apps, and driving to station car parks (by some!) there may be shorter exposures to rain etc and less 'demand' for shelter? On the other hand more leisure travel (and travel concessions?) makes potential passengers more considering of the 'journey experience' in their discretionary travel. Wondering.

Why do they always go for lifts instead of ramps? Surely ramps are more reliable and require much less maintenance? Just a thought.
Land may also be a concern, if the cutting/embankment side isn't stable enough to allow building up or digging out you may need to get a reasonable quantity of earth removed. Glynde's ramp for the up platform was able to be built up as the cutting is quite shallowly sloped https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4237898

On the new second platform there are to be two shelters with 6 seats and 4 squat seats in each.

The extended existing platform is to lose its current 1985 brick shelter with a bench that can seat 6 (8 if they squeeze up) and get a shelter with no seats of any sort and minimal canopy cover.

At least the footbridge and stairs are to be covered.

In 2019 Dore gained a canopy over the ticket machine and lost 6 open seats gaining covered squat seats beneath. No extra proper covered seats were provided because they were available in the soon to be demolished brick shelter. The six seats removed from the area now covered by the canopy were relocated down the platform - but have now been removed to build the new footbridge.

A start was made last Saturday night on erecting the 4 pre-cast concrete segments for each of the Dore & Totley station lift towers. 3 out of 8 in place, remainder hopefully this weekend. It's been very wet here today so that might have some effect. Once erected they will be brick faced. Work has begun to brick face platform edges but was called off today! What a difference a bit of sun makes, the blocks are waiting at the far end of the car park.

Update Sunday 22nd October after Saturday's deluge.

Dore lift shafts now 3/4 in place, final top sections to be added - next Saturday night?

Press release

Vital work on the Hope Valley Railway Upgrade is set to resume as improvements to the railway line between Manchester and Sheffield advance. As a result of these developments, train services will not run between Sheffield and New Mills stations on both Sunday 5th and Sunday 12th November.

These station closures are necessary to facilitate essential work along the route, including the installation of a second platform and new footbridge with lifts at Dore & Totley station, whilst the ongoing construction of a passing loop between Bamford and Hathersage stations continues.

Some rail operators are using diversionary routes between Manchester and Sheffield, so passengers are encouraged to check nationalrail.co.uk for more information about changes to journeys.

Passengers should also note that Dore & Totley station car park is currently closed until Tuesday 14th November to enable the work to take place.

Disabled parking and an alternative drop off point is in place temporarily at Ladies Spring Grove whilst local businesses Hair Union, Rajdhani restaurant and the Summerhouse restaurant, remain open and accessible throughout the closure.

When travelling to the station, passengers are encouraged to walk, cycle or car share where possible. All 97, 98 and 218 buses along Abbeydale Road South stop outside the station.

TransPennine will probably divert via Huddersfield again. EMR & Northern could be a replacement bus between Sheffield & Stockport although with the closure being on a Sunday most passengers won’t be affected.

Press release

The press release is somewhat behind the information made available locally and posted here on 24th August and 9th September. That includes all blockades planned until the end of March.

The whole press release is poorly written.
"Work is set to resume"? There has been no pause.
"These station closures"? The stations are not closed; the railway line is closed.
"train services will not run between Sheffield and New Mills stations"? New Mills is not a station. New Mills Central and New Mills Newtown are stations, and the PR is referring to the former.

It's wryly amusing for those who use Dore station to be encouraged to walk or cycle. The 32 space cycle shelter rarely see over 10 bikes even with the car park shut - it's rather hilly in south-west Sheffield and the roads by the station are busy- and currently clogged with parked cars displaced from the car park.

Use the bus? About 1% of local users do that, . although incoming visitors for Chatsworth from Manchester use the 218.

A lot do walk

I suspect it is nonsense as well, expensive is not the same as "impossible", but might the Severn Tunnel have a larger loading gauge ?

It was mentioned that since they shut the Derby to Manchester line and Woodhead there would be precious few avoiding routes whilst they electrified Totley Tunnel !

Diverting via Huddersfield's the norm when the Hope Valley's blocked these days.

How well does that work when not only is it along way around, but that line is already very busy and has single track sections ?

The diversions go via Wakefield Kirkgate. The Huddersfield to Sheffield time is amazing (I think 40 mins). Could be faster if they replaced the curve at Horbury. Which I think will give about a 1 hour 10 minute Sheffield to Manchester time. Not shabby at all.

(I can’t find a timetable example right now)

If they went via Penistone would need a reversal at Huddersfield.

Penistone is a non-starter over the single track sections. Diversion of the fast TPE services via Wakefield is relatively routine but adds almost half an hour to the normal TPE journey between Sheffield and Manchester, as it will on the next two Sundays.

EMR usually bus from Chesterfield and Sheffield to Stockport.

Northern may bus between New Mills Central and Sheffield - which takes for ever (1 hour 50 just for that section then change to train taking another 30 minutes plus connection time) and most who know will avoid.

A protracted blockade would decimate commuter traffic between the the two cities, add a further nail in the rail option from the east to Manchester Airport and severely damage the growing leisure market for the Hope Valley.

But don't be over concerned about passengers. How is limestone and cement traffic to be diverted?

My guess is that some bi-mode option is most likely. Electrify up to the Chinley end of Cowburn Tunnel and the Totley end of Totley Tunnel. Possibly electrify from Edale to Grindleford. The section from Sheffield through Dore would be a natural follow on from the MML scheme, as overrun probably part of it.

Last might the final two segments of the lift shaft towers at Dore were put in place and preparations are in hand to add the steps and walkway during the next few weeks, particularly the next two Sundays.

Just a gentle reminder this is a railway infrastructure thread to discuss updates regarding the Hope Valley upgrade.

Timetabling updates would belong in the timetabling section, while any posts of a speculative nature belong exclusively in Speculative Discussion please.

Many thanks.

Apologies for my ignorance but what are the two black lumps on poles in front of the lift tower on the new platform?
To add to what the others said, those boards (or a version of them) were there before the Dore upgrade works started.
The line from the Chesterfield direction is on a fairly fast right-hander, and without them I think from the curvature a driver would momentarily see the Hope Valley line signal before their own.
The line from the Hope Valley comes in on a left-hander and then curves right through the station - I've no idea which signal they would see first without the boards, but you can imagine the potential for confusion!

Once the footbridge is complete, and probably before, the stairs should do that job.
Should be a permanent one going in at the Manchester end of the platform in the tenfoot.

Weekend update

Looks like preparations are being made to move Signal S56 towards Sheffield, and probably S57 on the MML? Signal S55 will also have to be moved, not least because the new westbound track needs to go too close to where it is now.

The restored over bridge across the Sheaf now appears to be complete and rail laid over it.

Work, on the Dore loop/chord is now proceeding- after a long pause while the idea of soil nailing has been replaced by construction of a retaining wall - to be painted green (as was proposed at the public inquiry if memory serves correctly). Signal S55 is in picture 4 and also 6 from the reverse side after the excavator had withdrawn.

It would be interesting to see the passenger figures for the station after the work is done. If there were enough part of the station building could become a waiting room/cafe.

AIUI a combination of

1. Modern accessibility requirements limiting the geometry of ramps.
2. A policy that new footbridges are built to accommodate large loading gauges and OHLE electrification. Both to allow standard designs to be used, and because there is a long term aim to improve loading gauges and electrify lines.

Put them together and if you go with a ramped design you end up with ramps that are physically massive and are sill difficult for the manual weelchair users to use due to their overall length. You also normally have to have a staircase in addition to the ramp because long ramps are a problem for those who are infirm but not wheelchair users making the overall construction even larger.

The old station building is subject to a long lease to a Bangladeshi restaurant. There is another popular restaurant/coffee shop at the bottom of the car park. Two .mobile coffee businesses have tried to offer service at commuting times. The first lost a lot of money during a 6 month trial. The second was losing money after 2 months in 2020 but was seeing possible profitabilty ahead in March when Covid struck! You have to sell a lot of coffee very quickly to do that. Passenger numbers come in waves.

Pre-Covid passenger numbers had been consistently growing at 8-10% pa. The car park was enlarged from capacity about 20 to 129 in 2013 in anticipation of the current work. It filled up within 6 months and plans for more are under discussion.

2019-20 numbers fell just short of 225k due to pending lockdown that March. 2020-21 would have topped 250k. However they collapsed and thanks to post-Covid WFH and TPE woes will not recover previous levels before 2024-5 or later. 500k was being considered as likely by the 2030s but now seems over optimistic.

MAS/25 was extended at the Sheffield end of the up Bamford Loop last weekend.
Yesterday saw the successful installation of MAS25 bridge deck in Bamford, delivered on time without accident or incident. It marks the final civils intervention required to facilitate the installation of the 1km long Bamford Loop on The Hope Valley Capacity Project. The VolkerRail Ltd Story Contracting Limited Joint Venture have successfully extended three culverts, one bridge and undertaken significant earthworks retention to enable installation of the passing loop. They’ve delivered all of this whilst giving back to the local community. Well done to everybody involved! #HopeValley

Meanwhile work at Dore is ramping up. The lift shaft towers are being brick faced prior to installation of stairs and the bridge deck due within the next 4 weeks. Apparently this will require 7 crane lifts. The 1985 small brick waiting shelter is being prepared for demolition as it's too near the bridge.

Work on the new Dore loop has restarted now the civils at Bamford are as good as finished.

Is the new platform to be an island with two active faces?

No. No platforms on the Chesterfield route.

There's passive provision to add such a face but no likely scenario for that to happen.

The curve, gradient and close proximity of the River Sheaf would make that difficult (and expensive for 2 extra platforms) but stopping more trains would delay both them and those following.

Commercially, if such stops attracted say 500,000 annual extra users 400,000 would be current travellers using Sheffield and Chesterfield where there are more direct destinations available. Improving existing connections into and from Sheffield would, and hopefully will, be a better plan.

It won't matter for South Bound trains. They've decided to put tunnel controls in Bradway Tunnel that will prevent trains getting a Single Yellow at Dore South, and will instead have to wait for a Double Yellow. It's going to make it very hard to get a freight out at Dore South now, on to the Up Main. Harder than it is now. Because anything following, has to wait for a double yellow. Bonkers, all because of a 'new standard'.
