--EXCLUDING METRO LINES-- --EXCLUDING FORMER OPERATORS (that reduced my UK count fairly significantly)
How many operators have you used, from around the world? This is difficult, so here it goes, in no particular order:

UK:
Virgin Trains West Coast
Northern
CrossCountry
TransPennine Express
Greater Anglia
West Midlands Trains

SouthEastern

SouthWestern Railway
Govia Thameslink Railway
EuroStar
Great Western Railway
Arriva Trains Wales
Chiltern Railways
Merseyrail
Heathrow Express

Netherlands:
NS
Thayls (Wasn't sure which country this counted as)

Belgium:

Thayls (Wasn't sure which country)

Denmark:
DSB
LokalTog
RegionsTog (Does this still exist? Don't go to Lolland often enough)
OresundsTog (Partly DSB under another brand)

Germany:
Deutschbahn
ODEG
Metron

Austria:
Vienna Airport CAT
OBB

Sweden:
OresundsTag (Swedish part of OresundsTog)
SkaneTraffiken

China:

Czech Republic:
Ceske Drahy (Yes, I know I spelt that wrong)

Switzerland:
SBB

Italy:
Trenitalia

France:
EuroStar

Norway:
FlugToget

USA:
Amtrak

I'll probably add more as I remember, but it strikes me that I've only used the train in under half of the countries I've been too... Scary.

I have used all of the 21 train operators signed up to the TSA.
  1. Greater Anglia
  2. Scotrail
  3. London Overground (Arriva Rail London)
  4. Northern
  5. Arriva Trains Wales
  6. Virgin Trains East Coast
  7. East Midlands Trains
  8. Great Western Railway
  9. TransPennine Express
  10. Govia Thameslink Railway (note: Southern and GX are defunct train companies; these routes are now operated by GTR and the OP has requested defunct TOCs not be included)
  11. Grand Central
  12. Hull Trains
  13. West Midlands Trains (note: WMR and LMR are brand names; the operator is WMT)
  14. Merseytrail
  15. TfL Rail (to be renamed CrossRail in the near future)
  16. c2c
  17. Caledonian Sleeper
  18. South Western Railway
  19. Chiltern
  20. Virgin Trains
  21. CrossCountry
I have also used SNCF in France (and presumably RATP as they operate some of the RER lines), and Eurostar to get to France, but that's it (for now!)

I have also use various defunct operators and various metro operators, but the OP has requested specifically that these be excluded.

All but one then, as Island Line is operated by SWR and LNWR is operated by West Midlands Trains ;)

I can now also add that I have finally been on at least one journey with every TOC. Hull Trains from Selby to Doncaster today completing the set. :D

I'm a bit embarrased about only using c2c from Fenchurch Street to Limehouse but I will return to London again later this year and go all the way to Shoeburyness, amongst other routes!

In the UK, all of the current operators except LNER, the current East Coast incumbent.

In Europe, the ones I can recall are;

  • France - SNCF
  • Belgium - SNCB
  • Germany - DB, Harz Railway(Brockenbahn), Harz Elbe (Transdev), Erixx, Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn, Alex, National Express, Abelio Rail (possibly some others)
  • Luxembourg - CFL
  • Netherlands -NS, Arriva
  • Austria - OBB
  • Czech Republic - CD
  • Slovakia - ZSSK
  • Italy - FS
  • Switzerland - SBB, BLS, MOB, CJ, TPF, RHB, AB, RBS, THURBO, ZB, SOB, TMR, MGB, RA, TPC.
Elsewhere

  • Puffing Billy - Victoria, Australia.
I've also travelled on parts of the suburban network in & around Melbourne, but as the operators have changed a few times since I was living there, it doesn't count for this.

I have travelled on the following:
  • Gatwick Express
  • Island Line (SWR)
  • Southern
  • South Western Railway
  • Thameslink
  • West Midlands Railway
Govia Thameslink Railway is the operator of the Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink brands (also including Great Northern)

SWR operate Island Line

West midlands Trains (WMT) operate LNWR and WMR; some of their services actually change branding mid-route (e.g. Walsall to Liverpool Lime Street)

Thanks very much for the clarifications. :)

I actually quoted the TOCs from a list I found online.

I'm aware that SWR operate Island Line, which is why I put it in brackets, but Island Line was shown as a separate operator on the list I was quoting from.

Also, I had no clue there was a Walsall to Liverpool Lime Street service! Interesting bit of trivia there, that they change branding mid-route. :D

No problem:) The definitive list of operators participating in National Rail ticketing is listed in the Ticketing Settlement Agreement. (obviously that excludes other operators such as Eurostar, West Coast Railways etc...)

Another example is Stansted Express is a brand name for Greater Anglia operated services between Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street.

The confusion is caused by the DfT wanting some operators to use multiple brand names, instead of just one brand name, but let's not discuss the reasons for this here ;)

Looks like I am the first on this thread who has travelled on British Rail.

The fact that everyone's list is so impressively long is an indication of what is wrong with the post - privatisation railways.
