They go 140...been on this service loads of times and had a look on my speedo....they certainly are not sticking to 125. Neither do they dwell in stations for an age either.

Purely based on my travels and noting how difficult it is to make up time when there's been a delay, I still reckon they use the full 225km/h (140 mph).

I've been on a train from St Pancras to Ashford which departed four minutes late and arrived four minutes late and it seemed to be a clear run too. The earliest I've arrived at my destination on HS1 is one minute early (on three occasions) all of which were arriving at Ashford from Ebbsfleet. I have however seen trains running two or so minutes early on the stretch between Ebbsfleet and Ashford (generally the peak ones which skip Ebbsfleet) but they often then get held as they await a platform at Ashford. The timetable seems relatively tight to me.

Now that a few people have had a guess, can I quote the HS1 Network Statement?

Section 3.3.2.2 'Maximum operating speeds'
Section 1 Cheriton - Southfleet 300 kph
Section 2 Southfleet - St Pancras 230 kph

Then in Section 3.3.2.4 'Line operating speeds' they point out that domestic passenger trains are limited to 225 kph throughout both sections...

So it appears there are no longer any specific speed restriction applying only to the London tunnels, as of the Dec 2012 edition. I think there might have been earlier though...

I'm guessing that 230kph is not permitted on the approach to St Pancras tho.

... I wasn't guessing. Route knowledge. The number you're missing is 80 from just inside the portals then either 40 or 60km/h depending on the road you're on into SPI and 40 at the platforms.

Apologies if it came across that way - but one early reply in particular seemed quite wrong in stating that the speed limit was 110 mph throughout the entire London tunnels.

Clearly deceleration into the terminus is always implicit in any overall line speed description - just as it is when the ECML is described as a 125 mph route...

Quite.

If I ever see a post by class377/5 now, I just assume its wrong/made up/ordered from the highest floor of Thameslink Towers and just ignore it.

Not as bad as the US.

ANd then there is the whole thing about the ounce of feathers being heavier than the ounce of god.

Is that similar to the milli-Helen
(quantity of beauty required to launch one ship)

That's nice. Least I have one less person to reply to in future. Are you going to pick fault with everyone else then too or just me you don't like?
