As I mentioned above I could have got more traction if I'd done more short hops. I even got fed up of going over Shap and that's not a short hop.

The tenth trip out this year (I think). This time it was young Ben (he's 16 and keen, so I want to try and keep his interest up). This time it was going to be a day around Birmingham using a West Midlands day ranger, the prices with railcards for me £19.00 and Ben £14.40 (16-17 rail card. The first ticket we were using was a Northern complementary pass to Manchester Pic.
So starting at Barrow in Furness at 05:49 the day were something like this.

BIF - Man 195131 M Gripped
Man - Birmingham New St. (BHM) 221130 M + 121 T First winner of the day. As the Ranger did not start until Stoke on Trent (SOT) we bought two singles (£5.70 & £4.35) we did get gripped but not until after (SOT).
BHM - Great Malvern (GMV) 172344 M GMV is a new shack, so my first view of the Malvern worm and a GWR 800.
GMV - Worcester Foregate St. (WOF) 800021 C + T My first GWR 80x in the book IMG_3734.JPG I found the interior bland compared to the TPE & LNER interiors. Gripped.
WOF was a new shack, I found it a bit odd in that it only has two platforms and both of them are bi-directional and that each platform is normally only used by one TOC, it works and I can see the logic in it.
WOF - GMV 158950 C + T First of the 158/0s. Gripped.

More to follow just off out.

Great Malvern (GMV) - Ledbury (LED), 172335 T, forgot to say in my last post that GMV is also a new shack so it's also the first time that I've seen the Malvern worm. At LED we did see another spotter!
IMG_3730.JPG
LED - Worcester Shrub Hill (WOS) 800028 C + T second one in the book, WOS also a new shack, it looks to have been a big station in its day, but I'm not sure where the old G.W.R. would have gone?

WOS - WOF 165137 C + T a short trip but it puts us back on track.

WOF - BHM 172335 M Ben's first trip up the Lickey incline (in a DMU it's not much to talk about).

BHM - Birmingham Moor street (BMO) a bit of food shopping at BHM and then a short walk to BMO.

BMO - Solihull (SOL) 165010 C + T Lots of new units on Tyseley, then a cross platform change for our next train.

SOL - BMO 168328 C + T

BMO - Leamington Spa (LMS) 168322 +112 C + T Gripped, I can't help but smile when I type the short form for Leamington as the L.M.S. station is gone but the G.W.R. station is in use with the short form LMS.

LMS - Wolverhampton (WVH) 220012 + 013 T The start of our journey home at 17:15, For some reason the train was split at BHM so we had two train loads getting onto one train at about 18:00 (well planned). After getting off the train and waiting for our net one we seen a idiot pressing the door open button on the 220 when the train was in motion. WHY?

WVH - Crewe (CRE) 350247 T + 111 M Gripped, but a nice quiet train with loads of seats. This is where I thought that we may have some fun as I only part heard an announcement of a train beaning delayed to MAN due to trespasses on the line after a quick question our train was not affected.

CRE - MAN 323237 M I forget how big the toilets are on these units you could have a party in them. Gripped.

MAN - Preston (PRE) 331029 + 024 X2 M Got some of the best seats on these units under the pan, the breakers do go with a bang.

PRE - Lancaster (LAN) 390117 T

LAN - BIF 156463 M Gripped arrived back home 23:15. So a long day but was it worth it?

Miles 518 chains 72.

COPS 31

TRACTION 14

I would have liked more cops but going to WOF/S did take a bit of time out of the day, but we can always go back.

Now to start planning the next trip London, Glasgow?

The two lines at Foregate St are two separate routes, one towards Droitw9ch and the other towards Shrub Hill, bi-directional of course, with trains crossing over at Henwick to the west. In GWR terms 158950 would be a 158/9 (3 carriages) and the 158/0s (2 carriages)

I'm going by what my platform 5 book says, at the 158s it says 158/0 but all of the units all start with a seven as the unit number, so maybe these should be 158/7s (first one 158701) then you get 158/8 (first one 158880), then you get the 158/9s (starting with 158901).

Then the GWR reformed sets 158950 - 959 that are classed as 158/0 I don't think that TOPS or what it's called now will accept 158/10.

It turned out that my next trip was to Liverpool, the next one should be to London (how do you get the mileage for the Underground?).
This was a bit different for me as it was on a Tuesday rather than a Saturday, but I still started out at 05;49 to go to Liverpool and get a MR Saverway ticket at £5.55 very good value. I will be getting some more tickets later but I want to check that the trains are running first.

Barrow in Furness (BIF) - Preston (PRE) 195125 M
PRE - Liverpool lime st (LIV) 331023 T + 024 Something is starting to go right. I had about 3/4 of an hour to kill before going down the hole. So I got the two returns that I wasn't sure about at BiF.
LIV - Bidston (BID) 507027 M
BID - Neston (NES) 150252 T Gripped. The first of my two CDRs at £1.25.
NES - BID 150258 T Gripped.
BID - Hamilton Square (BKQ) 507020 M Starting to look for 507033 my last one for traction but I do have another plan.
BKQ - Chester (CTR) 508120 M
CTR - Wrexham General (WRX) 67008 C + T Gripped. One of the moves that I did go out for. WRX is like a building site at the moment. It could also be a new shack. I did also spot both of the 150s that I travelled on in the morning with one parked up on the road to Wrexham Central.
WRX - CTR 67010 C + T Gripped. So two 67s in the book, but how many are they using?
CTR - LIV 507032 M Next door to my last one.
LIV - Liverpool South Parkway (LPY) 158858 M + 806 T I'm going to do the moves to LPY as nothing on the TPE side is any use, the Northern stuff will be withdrawn before I can get them all (I think?).
LPY - LIV 150127 M + 226 M.
LIV - LPY 350242 M + 245 T
LPY - LIV 158865 T +156410 T This is more like it, but will it last?
LIV - LPY 350240 T + 350402 T Can it last?
LPY - LIV 350266 C T + 350130 T This is looking good.
LIV - PRE 319368 M Back to normal.
PRE - BIF 195132 M Gripped. Arrived back home at 22;03 I have done longer days out, was it worth it?

For a day out around Liverpool it was not that bad considering that no TPE stock was involved (only need 4 for traction that normally run into Liverpool).

Roll on London!

Unfortunately the London trip did not happen due to problems at this end.

The next one should be to Sheffield next Saturday to do a lot of tram bashing and to pick up about 30 copies of the Sheffield Star, so we can get some of the £10 Northern Rover / Ranger tickets.
All of the Northern network for a tenner, bargain.

I did get out on Saturday 23/10/21, it started off much like any of our trips at 05;49 we started of with three of us, Rick, Ben and myself. Rick bailed out at Wigan to go after two coaches in a Pendo. (don't ask). me and Ben carried on to Manchester to get 18 copies of the M. E. N. for the tokens (you only need two from this and some other papers). Kev had got me 5 Liverpool Echoes and 5 M. E. Ns. on Tuesday. Onto the trip report.

Barrow (BIF) - Manchester Pic. (MAN) 195111 M Gripped.
MAN - Sheffield (SHF) 195105 M Gripped.
We then spent a few hours on the trams, getting all of the Northern-ish lines in the book and 25 cops along with 11 for traction. We then called it a day on the trams. So we adjourned to the Sheffield Tap for a couple of pints, all was going well until this old bloke accused me of having his phone because it looked like it and I was looking at RTT and he had RTT on his phone. He learnt some new language in my accent.
Back onto the platform to do a bit of platform ending, after about 5 or 10 minutes a 66 sprung into view the train looked a bit odd. It was a consist of locos and about 6 hooded steel coil wagons. The locos were as follows 66185 M, 66103 C, 60092 C, 66006 C, 66161 C, 66027 C, 66128 M and 66148 C.
Starting back home we could have gone back via Man but decided to go back via Leeds.
SHF - LDS 158901 M Gripped.
Now the fun started, the train that forms our train back to Carnforth was running about an hour down on the S & C. We seen a Northern member of staff to ask what was going on and were told to get the 1856 to Skipton and that it would be sorted out there. Nice (not).
LDS - Skipton (SKI) 333013 M Gripped.
On the way to get the the now terminated S & C service, 47828 M and 47805 (new number cop). Went storming through.
SKI - Lancaster (LAN) 158752 M gripped. On the way I find out that the MAN - BIF service has been cancelled, so I had a word with the guard about this, he got onto "control" then went up and down the train to see where people were going to.

Then captain cock up joins in to the party. The platform staff at Lancaster did not know anything about the passengers on the service from Skipton, after a bit of time, more taxis were found to get us all home, late but home.

Not that bad a day out apart from getting back home. Interesting to see parts of Sheffield that I've never seen before.

Forgot about this run out, IIRC it was Ben ,Kev and me. Started off much as most of our trips do at 05;49. So the day went something like this.

Barrow (BiF) - Carnforth (CNF) 195113 M
CNF - Shipley (SHY) 158759 M Gripped
SHY - Saltley (SAE) 331109 T
SAE - SHY 331107 M
SHY - Menston (MNN) 333006 M Gripped. This was Kevs idea to do this move for the next move.
MNN - Leeds (LDS) 333014 T My next to last 333, when we got to Leeds Kev started to do his own thing, as normally can happen on our days out.
LDS - Bradford Interchange (BDI) 195129 M
BDI - Mirfield (MIR) 180114 M Gripped. This was Bens first ride on a 180 and I think that he liked it for the quality of the seats and that the seats we were in line with the windows.
MIR - LDS 185123 T
LDS - Wakefield Westgate (WKF) 800112 T
WKF - LDS 158789 T Now for the next interesting move.
LDS - Castleford (CDF) 158902M This takes us passed Midland Road depo within the following on it, 70013, 009, 66513, 572 C, 511, 70018, 005, 66621 C, 564 C & 593.
CDF - LDS 158842 M Gripped
LDS - BDI 195106 M Gripped. For a late running Grand Central train to KGX. Time to meet up with Kev.
BDI - Brighouse (BGH) 180108 T Not bad one out of two for traction. Very slow run dow the bank I think it was due to leaf fall.
BGH - BDI 180112 M Back to normal with this class but I do only want about four of the G. C. ones.
BDI - LDS 195124 M We got over taken by a couple of tortoises going up the bank out of BDI due to not getting any traction. Leaf fall again? But we did get to LDS for the following.
LDS - Huddersfield (HUD) 68029 T When we got there we were faced with a load of football "fans" but with a large police presence.
HUD - LDS 185122 T
LDS - CNF 158753 M Gripped.
CNF - BIF 195102 M

So how was the day in some ways eventful, was it good on the railway front I would say yes with the following.

Miles 354.

Back home on time at 22;03.

I'm getting slower at doing my trip reports. This trip was to go and see Heaton Lodge junction (the layout) at Wakefield. The day started a bit later than normal for me at 06;49. We started off with 5 of us. So the day went something like this.

Barrow (BIF) - Preston (PRE) 195121 M
PRE - Bradford Interchange (BDI) 195118 M Gripped but some of us bought our West Yorkshire day saver train (£8.30). From the conductor and he told us that we were the first tickets he had sold on the two trips he had done. This was an interesting rout to take as it took us through the real Heaton Lodge junction.
BDI - Wakefield Kirkgate (WKK) 180102 M
Now for the walk up to the market to go and see the layout £5.00 to get in, not a bad price. The thing that impressed me was the constant quality of the scenery from one end of the layout to the other. You know it's a big layout when you see these at one end.IMG_3997.JPG
After we had finished looking at the layout it was time for a pint or two and then onto Wakefield Westgate (WKE) to start playing trains.
WKF - Leeds (LDS) 801214 C + T First winner of the day.
LDS - Huddersfield (HUD) 185145 + 117 M x2
HUD - LDS 68019 M
LDS - HUD 68030 T that has got me down to 3 TPE class 68 for traction.
HUD - Halifax (HFX) 158815 M Gripped
HFX - PRE 195118 M I did turn down a winner on the preceding train as it was wedged. A two car 195. But I had to get over to Preston for my last 195/1. It was going to be tight as I only had a + 5 or 6. Then Captain Cock up joined in the party. The 195/1 that I wanted was caped due to train crew problems, only an hour to wait but it was starting to look promising as it just pulled down the platform and shut down.
PRE - BIF 195101 T + 105 M 195101 was an important traction cop as this was my last 195/1. So off we go until we get to Lancaster and the guard / conductor announces that the back three coaches are going to be locked out, so more fun and we are getting later,. So is a delay repay on the cards. You bet your bottom dollar the train arrived into BIF at about 22;25 so over an hour late as I should have been home at 21;03

Was it a good day out? Yes, the layout is well worth seeing. This was its first public showing and it did have some faults would I go to see it again YES and I would recommend anyone to go and see it.

We had our first proper day out this Saturday (5/2/22) starting off at Barrow (Bif) on the 05;49 and on to Leeds (Lds) to start using the West Yorkshire day rover train. At £8.30 good value as it can be used on all services in its area (including Grand Central).
So this is how the day panned out.

BiF - Carnforth (CNF) 195113 M
CNF - LDS 158755 M Gripped. But it was good for charging the phone and the spare battery.
LDS - Wakefield Westgate (WKF) 220016 M + 221125 T.
WKF - LDS 91106 T There were about 4, 91 turns booked for this day.
LDS - Mirfield (MIR) 195128 M
MIR - Wakefield Kirkgate (WKK) 180104 T This has now got me down to two G.C. 180s will I get another one?
WKK - LDS 195004 T This took us past Midland road but the train was rammed and we were on the wrong side.
LDS - WKK 195004 M Gripped. Going past Mid Rd. I got the following, 70013 / 018 / 009 / 005 / 019 / 66567 / 70004 / 66585 / 571 / 556 / 420 C / 594 C.
WKK - MIR 180107M So I'm still at requiring two G. C. 180s
MIR - Huddersfield (HUD) 185122 M
HUD - LDS 185114 T
LDS - HUD 185145 M + 130 T
HUD - LDS 68032 M
LDS - HUD 802205 M
HUD - LDS 185121 T + 127 T This is were the plan goes a bit to pot due a person being hit by a train. The next move should have been a 91 but!
So to fill in time before our train home we did the following.
LDS - WKF 331104 M
WKF - LDS 43208 M + 239 M Nice to get a bit of H. S. T. action in.
Then the brown stuff hit the fan our train to CNF is cancelled. No time to a fill in move so time for a pint.
LDS - PRE 195112 M Now for more fun.
PRE - LAN Bus lots of fun???????
LAN - BIF 156428 M + 489 M What an end to a day.

So how was the day over all some good winners, but some problems that you just have to put up with, with the problem with the Carnforth train it's looking like we should get a delay repay ticket.

I did put in a delay repay for the last journey and got one ticket back instead of four, it's now on going.
Some of the lads mentioned about having a day out in Liverpool (LIV) as I've not been out much this year and still wanting one 507 for traction, I thought why not.
As with most of our days out it was planned for the 05:49 off Barrow (BIF), that's when the fun started cancelled so it was onto the next train.

BiF - Lancaster (LAN) 156482 T Gripped, but not a bad start as if the 05;49 had run it would have been a 1951XX and I have all of them for traction. Not for a bit of a fester on LAN for the next train that I'm valid on.
LAN - Preston (PRE) 195119 M
PRE - LIV 331015M + 018M Gripped.
LIV - Liverpool Central (LIC) 507003M
LIC - Sandhills (SDL) 508137 M + 125 M If you don't know SDL it's an island platform station that is at the junction of three lines, the down side is that you have to be at the end of the platform the train is approaching from if it's a six coach train. I did do a good bit of walking in the hour and a half I was there. So back to LIC and down to the Wirral line to view all the trains on the Wirral you have a choice of three stations Moorfields (deep level) Lime st. (deep level) and Central (deep level).
SDL - LIC 508125 M + 137 M Now to camp out in the tunnel.
LIC - Birkenhead Central (BKC) 507033 T My last 507/8 for traction and it was on the second train on the deep level.
BKC - LIV 508103 M Now to go back to the main and see if I can get any of my last TPE 802s.
LIV - Newton Le Willows (NLW) 802211 M
NLW - Lee Green (LEG) 8022219 T now down to two TPE 802s
LEG - NLW 802205 M
NLW -LIV 802212 T Now down to one TPE 802
LIV - NLW 323229 T
NLW - Earlestown (ERL) 150252 M I did think that I had a chance to pick this up for traction.
ERL - LIV 319366 T
LIV - Wigan north western (WGN) 331012 T + 005 M This was an interesting journey as it took the line through ERL & NLW and then Via Newton Le Willows junction, Lowton junction and Goldborne junction. Then onto WGN this looks to be the only Northern service that does this route on a Saturday (18;00 off LIV).
WGN - PRE 319385 T
PRE - Carnforth (CNF) 195101 M Time for a pint in the Snug.
CNF - BIF 195103 M Gripped

So how was the day out? Some very good winners, the problem with what should have been the first train caused me to be over an hour late in to Liverpool so I've put in for delay repay.

For my next day out I had my young bud Ben wit me. As is pretty normal for us we started off at Barrow (BiF) on the 05:49 and heading down to Birmingham (BHM) on a West Midlands day ranger starting at Stoke on Trent (SOT) at £19 with rail card discount good value, then the day went like this.

BIF - Manchester Pic. (MAN) 195101 M This unit was ridding a bit rough on the plain track (also my last 195 for traction a bit back)
MAN - Wolverhampton (WVH) 220004 M + 129 T We did have tickets for this part of the trip, the train was busy but not packed.
WVH - Smethwick Galton Bride (SGB) 350249 M first grip of the day, this was where things went to pot the train that we should have got was just loosing time so time to change the plan.
SGB - BHM 350256 C & T we could have got a train about 5 mins earlier but it was wedged so decided to get this one.
BHM time for a bit of platform ending to fill in time. Then it was time to walk over to Moor st. (BMO)
BMO - Solihull (SOL) 168214 C & T + 323 C & T Why do they put White numbers on an orange / yellow back ground? This is to do with all of the new units at Tyseley.
SOL - BMO 68015 M on one of the refurbished sets
BMO - Leamington Spar (LMS) 68015 M to get the second 68 of the day
LMS - BMO 68010 C & T This is starting to get a bit better, lets see how we can get on
BMO - Stourbridge junction (SBJ) 172101 T + 003 C & T Now lets see what the 139 is?
SBJ - SGB 172339 T
SGB - BHM 158837 T + 818 C & T Then things started to go a bit off kilter, so a bit more platform ending.
BHM - SOT 350249 M
SOT - MAN 323229 M + 238 T Gripped for the second time of the day. SOT was also a new shack for me. What is the bar like on P1? We should have a good connection at MAN of about +9 or 10 but a late running XC train had some problems in the station and caused us to start about -5. By the time we got to MAN on P8 we were about 6 down, we had got ourselves primed for the footbridge at MAN and were out by about 20', over to P14 and we were on the platform before our train had started to arrive so it was up to the starting signal.
MAN - PRE 331010 M + 019 M
PRE - BIF 156463 M Not one of the best trains to get back home as the 22:03 arrival in to BIF is not running, so you end up with two train loads of passengers on a two car set.

So how was the day out? Some good winners like last of class and sub classes, some of the problems on the West Midlands Trains did cause us some problems, but nothing that we couldn't sort out.
