INTERCITY Mk3 rolling stock - loco-hauled vs HST.

What is the correct coaching stock for INTERCITY swallow HST models please? Which manufacturer made them? I have the Hornby power cars, just want to match the correct set with them.

As usual, thanks in advance.

Hornby sell the relevant Mk3’s, but you just need to take care to try and get relatively recently produced ones as these are the correct length according to the prototype. Some older models are shorter than is realistic, but if you aren’t bothered you could pick these up cheaper.

The HST coaches are Mk3, whereas the loco hauled ones are Mk3a I believe and these were most recently produced by Oxford Rail, so watch out for those ones.

Lima produced the first scale length HST mark 3s in the eighties, at a time when Hornby were producing their short versions to accompany their own contemporary HST power cars.

Hornby produced a newly tooled scale length HST mark 3 range, consisting of First Open, Trailer Standard and Trailer Restaurant First Buffet, in 1999, which are appropriate for the current, post-2008 tooling of the HST power car.

The ex-Lima Trailer Guards Standard was introduced to the Hornby range in largely unchanged form around 2007 (but benefitted from improved glazing). I think, though, that the whole range has since been retooled again, in 2022, to bring the TGS up to a common standard with the rest (but has so far only seen an Intercity release in Executive livery, rather than Swallow).

Most recent Hornby Intercity Swallow liveried releases have been:

R40002/A - Trailer First 41085/6
R40003/A/B/C - Trailer Standard 42169/8/7, 103
R40004 - Trailer Buffet First 40703
R40005 - Trailer Guards Standard 44055 (Ex-Lima)

From the Hattons directory, previous scale length IC Swallow releases carrying HST fleet numbers have been:
Trailer First: R4853
Trailer Standard: R4854
Trailer Buffet First: R4851
Trailer Guards Standard (Ex-Lima): R4314/A, R4852

Formation wise most "Swallow" era HST rakes were 8 coaches, formed of 2x TF, 1x buffet car, 4x TS and 1x TGS.
Cross Country rakes were 7 coach with only 1 TF instead of 2.
There were also a few "Pullman" rakes on the East Coast Main Line and Midland Main Line (the latter for the "Master Cutler") which had 3x TFs and one less TS.
