If we‘re talking about preservation for enthusiasts, that would rather ruin the ambience.

Perhaps

But, allowing time for maintenance, you quite simply can't fill an 8 coach train with enthusiasts 6 days a week.

So the target market will be comfortable leisure travel direct to desirable tourist destinations and a small number of enthusiasts who will engage/bore leisure travellers with tales of how they aren't sitting on a "proper" Mk3 coach.

Perhaps they can keep us bores in a seperate carriage

That aside, there are plenty of normals who seem to enjoy railtours in mk1‘s even, so I doubt a few mk3 doors are going to put them off!

much of the rest of the fleet is still in use ...

All of the remaining fleet is in use (with the exception of some restaurant coaches). The stuff that isn't was accident damaged (Southall, Ladbroke Grove, Ufton Nervert).

1976 such a long time ago! I remember them all being built in Crewe Works. Initially two of them of the production fleet were painted black I remember seeing 43002 in this livery stabled on Crewe Diesel Depot from a passing train, it soon returned to the works for painting in the normal livery for that time. Got dozens of pics of them in primer being towed around the Works and also in the erecting and paint shops. Usually about 8 of them at a time being built.

Just to clarify the livery in case younger members not sure what I meant, when I said black it was not all over. Black top and Yellow bottom half, then it was painted into the standard blue and yellow. As an addition, it was always very confusing when both power cars allocated to their respective set had the same 253xxx or 254xxx number displayed on the front.
