On the Mk 4's you generally get people perching in the vestibule. Some of them have prams and whatnot whilt others might be going a shorter distance. Since there's plenty of room it's not really an inconvenience.

What's the shortest distance on the ECML? Stevenage to the 'Cross which I guess is around 20 minutes. Push chairs are one thing as it takes a lot of effort to get a infant out of their pram (or at least it can do) but to stand for 20 minutes on a Intercity journey when there are seats available is just silly.

Hello! *waves*

Quite regularly just pick a spot in a vestibule on a Mk4 when the train is busy and I'm just doing a hop between Darlington and York (about 30 minutes) rather than faffing finding a seat.

Maybe those people have office jobs, are driving or are otherwise sitting around all day anyway.

It's usually Leeds-Wakefield-Doncaster I observe the phenomenum. Personally I don't have any truck with standing, but some seem to.

Hello Ainsworth74 *waves back*.

I suppose there's a sort of critical mass where a carriage might not be entirely full but a passenger might not think it worth going through and checking all the reservation labels for the gaps.

Haymarket to Waverley is the usual shortest journey when buying a point earning focussed journey on the ECML.

For GWR, it will be 32 out of 36 5 cars and 17 out of 21 9 cars.

89% and 81% availability respectively. I wouldn't consider the latter that great for a modern train.

Or the GWML, the middle seat does get used a lot.

Don't forget the 165s / 166s are slightly wider than most other Rolling Stock and is making use the the wider loading gauge on GW.

And Wakefield Westgate to Doncaster is only 15.

There are other short journeys too such as Doncaster-Retford, Retford-Newark, and Newark-Grantham that are all under 20 mins.

and for the latter 3 VTEC and the ECML is primary way of doing the journey

where the Leeds - W Westgate - Doncaster also has the Northern stopping service

165/166 are wider than other 23m length stock, but basically the same as 20m length (e.g. Mark 1s). In effect they are C3 gauge length and C1 gauge width - it's only a matter of a few cm.

In practice that means they are same width as a 365 or 465, but 3m longer, so the seats across argument is irrelevant as a 465 had the same width for 2+3 seating.
