How many years do you think the Pendolinos have left in them? Franchising & stock allocation aside.

They went in to service around 2000 with a design life of 35 years.

On one side they were designed for 140mph running and have only ever done 125moh in service so have had an "easy life" in that respect, the components will not have been as thermally stressed as they were designed for. But they also do more mileage than originally thought (approx 1000 miles per day) so this will add stress from a fatigue point of view.

I'd expect they could easily last until 2040 without problems but with modern stock obsolescence of electronics is much greater so the costs of keeping them going could hasten their demise.

You also have to consider what customers want, they were delivered with an MP3 player system that was supposed to be a major selling point! When you consider what we expect now in terms of entertainment, passenger information and other things we could well find out in 10 years they are completely outdated and unwanted.
