In terms of area, what is the best value for money day ticket in the UK?

A Cumbria Day Ranger covers Preston / Skipton-Dumfries / Lockerbie / Haltwhistle, both via Shap and via Whitehaven. A very large area and many miles, but not with the comfort of a PTE price, like West Yorkshire is!

I suspect the Centro Daytripper is relatively good value for money, especially given the density of lines and services. It's all well and good having a large area but not if there aren't the surfaces to justify it.

Even better for me as I can get a half fare one. Looks like the price has gone up steeply though. It was £5.70 or £2.85 before the fair rise! Still good value however.

Southern All Network Downlander £12.50 for Milton Keynes Central to Ashford International and Southampton (on Southern only) most of South London Surrey and Sussex plus Buses in the Brighton-Eastbourne and Uckfield areas.

Have to stick up for both the Merseyrail Saveaway All Areas and the Greater Manchester PTE Rail Ranger. Both are £4.60 (adult) and the coverage is rather good for money imo!

Two great value day rangers:

Devon Day Ranger, £10
- Tiverton Parkway / Axminster to St Budeaux Ferry Road plus Exmouth, Barnstaple, Paignton and Gunnislake branches
- The challenge is to do all that track in one day. I think it can just about be done (at least in the previous timetable when I checked) but it's not easy, especially visiting both St Budeaux stations!

- All of Greater Manchester plus extensions into Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire including Warrington, Northwich, Holmes Chapel, Macclesfield, Buxton and the Hope Valley as far as Grindleford, plus all of MetroLink

My choice would be the London 1-6 travelcard.

Given it covers an area of around 600 square miles, including pretty much all public trasport options within that area, (bus, tram, rail & underground), its fantastic value for money.

A *lot* of public transport options but hardly pretty much all (not coach, taxi, tour bus, river services - though it gives a discount on these). Admittedly London has a lot more public transport both included and excluded.

£10 gets you on all Valley Lines trains (plus a few others) operated by Arriva Trains Wales after 9.15am. It also gets you access to all of Stagecoach in South Wales services, the main operater in the Valleys.

'Course when I were a lad I used to pay 50p for a bus and train child day rover (no rail only option back then). I remember the price going *down* to that from £1 (Adult down from £2 to £1, family down to £2). Ah, 1988.

They were in the format of the Copenhagen day tickets where you validated them by sticking them in a Saverstrip ker-chinger. Meaning you'd have trouble using one for entering the county on a train.

Worth knowing that the Valley Lines Day Explorer (the official name) can be purchased and used on Stagecoach buses before 9.15am. Not publicised but definitely true- recently confirmed with Stagecoach South Wales

Oxford Evening Out? £3 adult, £2 railcard, £1.50 child; valid after 18.50 from Banbury to Didcot (and to Bicester and Kingham too)—you can shave quite a bit off XC fares with this.

In South Yorkshire there is the South Yorkshire Daytripper at £6 valid for a days unlimited travel by bus and tram plus trains after 09:30. This includes Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley.

Supertram's day ticket at £3.70 isn't too bad value for a days unlimited travel in Sheffield, especially as it is also valid on Stagecoach buses anywhere in the city plus Dronfield, Eckington and Killamarsh.

The Derbyshire Wayfarer isn't too bad at £10.50 - by train you can travel New Mills Central-Sheffield-Langley Mill/Derby-Burton/Uttoxeter/Long Eaton/Matlock on it.
