Just seen this

Apparently West Coast Railways, but in the path of a cancelled Northern service.

The Middlesbrough Whitby service was cancelled at Battersby because of overrunning engineering work http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y41356/2014/01/09/advanced

Have WCRC really run this service for Northern? The Northern unit seems to be returning ECS http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O59073/2014/01/09/advanced to Middlesbrough.

There is also a cancelled Grosmont to York ECS service http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U50659/2014/01/09/advanced

Pity I am not at home or some pics would have been good

Probably 61264 on its way to Carnforth.

The first Whitby service from Middlesbrough got no further than Battersby due to a track problem. There'll probably be a path appearing at some point for the B1 from Middlesbrough if that's what it was.

It would appear so that WCRC Did indeed run this service in for Northern, with the few Northern passengers getting a 'first class' service in 61264's Mk1 Support Coach.

And some happy passengers enjoying a probably more comfortable service than a Northern 156!

And definitely more comfortable than a 142 pacer which sometimes substitutes

Good for West Coast (and Northern), some common sense and kindness appears to have prevailed at last. :)

When was the previous last Steam operated train which appears in the National Rail Timetable?

History Today suggests 11 August 1968 - and that was a Special

Did a bit of Googling and found this thread from on here in 2010:

"I should have put it on the trivia forum, it was 1999, a steam train replaced a Scotrail 156 on a Fort William to Mallaig portion of its Glasgow to Mallaig journey as part of the Highland Railway Festival in 1999

http://www.uksteam.info/tours/trs99.htm Gives more info, but does not say the exact service, but it was reported in the rail press back then "

Did Tornado not run a service train out of Victoria (?) a few years ago during bad weather to get people home? Or were some passengers just allowed to board a charter that happened to stop where they wanted to go?

Definitely a charter, with a few empty seats and someone with an eye on good publicity.

I'm not sure if extra stops were made though. I'd have thought something like that would be too complex for the MDTR :|

Edit. Just found this 2009 link referring to it

http://www.pprune.org/jet-blast/399718-steam-train-rescues-commuters-last-night-london-victoria.html

''hi there
i would like to thank the owners of the new tornado steam locomotive which was at london victoria station last night at 6pm which was doing a steam charter special to dover,

about 80 commuters including myself, who were trying to get home to bromley, swanley and maidstone in kent were unable to get southern or southeastern electric trains due to the weather and we saw a train on
departure board at platform 2 to maidstone via swanley...we didnt know it was steam until we saw the engine!

the operators of the steam train tornado said ''jump on'' and about 80 of us piled on as they were not quite full...

hats off to them and we all got home by steam train within an hour !

amazing that steam can run and new trains cant..!!
we also found out that tornado is actually a brand new steam engine !
thanks ''

For one day in October 2001, steam-hauled trains replaced some of the ordinary passenger trains between Fort William and Mallaig, as part of the centenary celebrations for the Mallaig line. The enthusiasts present had mostly made a contribution to the cost of the event, but there was nothing to stop anyone travelling at normal fares.

As I recall, 61264 was one of the locomotives involved, and with 4 coaches it more or less (to within a minute or two) matched the Sprinter timing from Mallaig to Glenfinnan.

There is a brief account at http://www.fofnl.org.uk/newsletters/0202/020215.html.

Expect it NOT to be on all the front pages tomorrow!

A good example of cross industry cooperation and collaborative working ensuring that the best "customer experience" is delivered to the passenger which also, of course, meets with the wider industry target of reducing bustituation. It is a fine example of the ingenuity that keeps the railway running ;)

So what was the reason behind this service running?

Failure of the Northern service to get beyond Battersby owing to overrunning engineering work.

By good fortune the loco movement was scheduled that day.

There's also this 'steam train rescue' story from 2009, I see it's already covered but the BBC page is interesting:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8428097.stm

Passengers were rescued by a steam locomotive after modern rail services were brought to a halt by the snowy conditions in south-east England.
Trains between Ashford and Dover were suspended on Monday when cold weather disabled the electric rail.
Some commuters at London Victoria faced lengthy delays until Tornado - Britain's first mainline steam engine in 50 years - offered them a lift...
