So what? Merseyrail run trains, to Southport, from a nearby big conurbation.

It's a bit different. Southport is really a Liverpool commuter suburb - West Kirby is near enough the Wirral equivalent. Blackpool does not really fulfil that same role for Manchester, though it does, a bit, to Preston.

Yes, but also since.

Fair enough. Maybe the summer timetable does need to add a pair of units doing a Preston shuttle at the opposite 15 minutes to the Manchesters, then.

Isn't Lancaster the county town of Lancs, not Preston?
No

That’s a pretty pitiful number compared to its population - not to mention external visitors. Does anywhere fare as badly in that regard?

Also in regard to its rail service, 1.8m for the frequency there is shockingly low.
But some of that population use the Blackpool South line

Not forgetting Blackpool have won the play-off match and will be in the Championship next season so a whole new set of football fans will be travelling there when Blackpool will be at home.
Can't see it having any impact. Even when Blackpool were in the Premiership, I can't remember seeing any changes to the service on the South Fylde line from the normal standard Saturday service.

Worth noting that since the timetable change not all Blackpool - Manchester services are formed of six car sets. Today there are only three such sets, all going to Hazel Grove except for one trip to Manchester Airport and back last thing. Most are formed of three or four car sets. You've also got the issue with the 1626 from Manchester Airport which stops at Bolton and Chorley but goes to Barrow-in-Furness rather than Blackpool North so has to be a diesel unit. Whops.

That's a shame, where have the rest of the units that were forming 6-car sets gone? Just as I thought it had been got right.
