Hi all,
I’m a frequent traveller from Stratford to London Liverpool Street and I use Greater Anglia trains for the 10 min journey everyday.
I tap in with my contactless card at Stratford and out at Liverpool Street.
9 out of 10 trains which stop in the morning have no First Class, but sometimes there are trains which come from Norwich which has the first class carriages at the front and the rear.
Being the opportunistic commuter I am, I like to stand at the very front of the train in order to be the first off and avoid the insanity which is the barriers at Liverpool Street in the morning.
When you board these trains there is a vestibule in the first class carriage which is isolated from the first class seating area by two button operated doors. So for two years whenever I encounter one of these trains I will stand in this vestibule and never sit in any of the seats.
Then one day a revenue inspector walks through the carriage and says “you’re lucky you have me today because some of my colleagues would give you a penalty fare just for standing in the first class categorised carriage. These passengers pay more for the privilege to exit a non crowded carriage at the front of the train. And being here prevents them from doing that.”
Apart from the condescending tone of the inspector I’m glad I didn’t get a penalty fare, but I started to think if I did get a penalty fare - is what he is saying true and would I be able to fight it? Especially given I was never afforded the option to buy a first class ticket as I tapped in and I was not occupying a seat.
Will be interesting to see what any of you think about this and if what he is saying is true!
Thanks
