Hi folks,

Great forum!

I've been looking and have had no luck securing a list of drugs tested for, both as part of the application process and the random tests.

Does anyone know if Anabolic Steroids -specifically testosterone are tested for?

Another way of putting it is -is it on the prohibited list!

Many thanks for any info!!

Hormones were not on the testing list I saw. It was more the obvious 'non prescription drugs' it looked for!

The same way they do in nearly all sports nowadays!
Urine test.

That's it really, it's as to whether they bother to check levels of testosterone.

If someone is supplementing then the same hormone is there but possibly x3.

Maybe they don't check as it doesn't impact on safety issues.

Obviously they check for opiates, cannabis and cocaine etc. Just wondered if anybody knew for sure if AAS were on the list.

Thanks everyone for the reply so far, much appreciated!

I don't know the answer to your question, but long term usage of anabolic steroids is risky. I doubt they would test for them, but you would certainly need to mention that you take them at the medical.

IIRC testosterone isn't measured in urinalysis, but would need a total testosterone blood test.

I have a card here I was sent after a random 'Track Safety Drugs and Alchohol Screen'. It says;

"The Donor has been tested for all the drugs listed...
Amphetamines, Cannabis, Methadone, Opiates, Cocaine, Benzodiazepines, Propoxyphene, MDMA (Ecstasy)."

There was also a breath test for alcohol.

Unfortunately there are a rather large number of medicines that come under the umbrella terms above, so unless someone had a BNF or medical knowledge to tell you exactly what would be tested for, I'd be tempted to say what you take and don't keep anything back...

Quite misguided ...

http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/112/3/332.short
"This is the first population-based prospective study that has found a specific association between cortisol:testosterone ratio and incident ischemic heart disease, apparently mediated through the insulin resistance syndrome"

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10332571
"The main concerns for the potential adverse effects of testosterone treatment are the prostate and the cardiovascular system. Androgens play a permissive role in the development of prostate cancer and benign prostate hyperplasia"

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC164360/
"The Safety and Efficacy of Anabolic Steroid Precursors: What is the Scientific Evidence?" ..... "It appears that the risks associated with the use of anabolic steroid precursors outweigh any possible ergogenic benefits"

So, indirect safety issues include increased risks of heart failure and diabetes. Also possible increased risk of cancers, esp of endocrine system and prostate.

From a mental health POV, take a look at these:

http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/content/53/4/375.short
"These results partially support previous findings in animals, adolescents, and criminal populations that "aggressive dominance" is related to testosterone."

Related to railway careers - would you want a train driver / signalman who has a higher-than-normal risk of a sudden ischemic attack, or is likely to be impaired through failing to regulate their blood sugar? Or one who is potentially more likely to make egocentrical decisions, or be impaired in their decision making, or more likely to have personal problems through, for example, being infertile?

IMO it should be tested for...

It's a pity that the people who do think they need these "supplements" in their life don't have a working knowledge of biological sciences...otherwise they would know, for example, just how much of the "pure" amino acids in "protein shakes" are the wrong enantiomer, or have come from (I kid you not) hair from barbers shops, or even worse places.

Most people don't realise that up until only a few years ago, almost all of the world's supplemental thymidine came from herring sperm...

As long as what you are taking is not illiegal, it will not go against you if you declare everything you have taken recently at the time of the medical. However you may be told to stop taking it in order to be able to start work

When I had a random D&A test was asked if I had consumed any energy drinks & protein shakes. Also had to give dates (even if an approximation). Urine was checked for drugs even stuff like PCP.

Remaining was tested for diabetes and protein present in urine (for kidney function).

The reason I was asked about energy drinks & protein shakes was due to the fact that they can have some things in them that show up on tests but won't be a fail.

I forgot to mention that I had creatine when completing the paperwork. Nothing came back as being of concern.

Testosterone is naturally found on the body and would be unlikely to flag up

Hope this is of use
