I can just about remember seeing the class 309 units in Jaffa Cake livery. How long did this livery last before it was replaced by the Network Southeast livery? Also I know some southern third rail units got this livery but did anything else get it and was there ever any consideration to put all Network Southeast stock into these colours rather than the red, white and blue livery.

Southern CEP's and a few CIG's.

In Kent, the jaffa cake era seemed to last a good few years.

'Jaffa cake' was the livery of the London & South East Sector of British Rail before it became Network South East. Therefore, the Network South East colours effectively superseded it. There is another thread ongoing talking about the possibility of blue and green based versions of the orange stripe livery that didn't happen - https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/l-se-green-livery.278475/.

It was carried by many of the large fleet of class 411 (4-CEP) units, but also by some class 309 units and a handful of class 421 (4-CIG) units.

The small number of 4-CIG units didn't carry Jaffa Cake livery for very long, and neither did the 309s, being repainted into NSE colours quite quickly. There were a small number of refurbished phase 1 CIGs that got blue-grey on refurbishment instead of Jaffa Cake as they were being refurbished right at the time Network South East was about to launch.

Information here about the 4-CIGs.

‘Jaffa Cake’ Livery

The first eleven units were delivered in the L&SE two‑tone brown (Jaffa Cake) livery, but a change of policy led to the next few reverting to blue /grey prior to the introduction of the NSE red /white /blue livery, the eleven ‘Jaffa Cake’ units being fairly quickly repainted into these colours. All units eventually gained NSE livery, units nos.1716 ‑ 1731 being new in the first version, no.1732 upwards were outshopped in the second style, and nos.1701 ‑ 1711 gaining the first version when they lost ‘Jaffa Cake’ livery. Units nos.1712 ‑ 1715 went direct from blue /grey to the later NSE style, and all the early version NSE units later were painted a second time in the later style.

Following refurbishment, all units were outshopped in blue /grey livery, but later many started to be repainted into London & South East two-tone brown livery (known as ‘Jaffa Cake’); 1602 being the first done during March 1985 at Selhurst - though not all were done. Unit 1602 was held for a press launch of the new livery at Rochester on 8th May 1985.

As the units were now fitted with removable seat covers, they no longer needed to visit main works for periodic retrimming and their body overhauls were therefore all carried out at Selhurst Paint Shop during a C6L overhaul with involved repainting and changing the door locks.

Units did not begin visiting Eastleigh works again until early in 1989 when a cycle of heavier C2 overhauls were commenced. The ‘Jaffa Cake’ livery was altered from about June 1986 with the orange band being edged with a black line along the bottom edge. Altogether 38 units were painted in the first style and a further 65 gained the second style of ‘Jaffa Cake’ colours before repainting was suspended with unit 1619 in September 1988 and all later units started to go into NSE livery.

The last repaint of a 4-CEP out of Jaffa Cake livery was in 1991.

The last repaint of a 4-CEP out of Jaffa Cake livery was in 1991.

I never knew about the CIG's being repainted into blue/grey.

There were still a couple knocking around in trojan moquette into the 90's.

Don’t forget about the MLVs that were also painted in Jaffa Cake livery for use on the boat trains.

Early artist impressions of the Class 442s also showed them in Jaffa Cake livery.
