I think TPE should start a morning service from Whitby that arrives into Middlesborough by 0830 by calling at certain stops such as Grosmont, Danby, Battersby, Great Ayton then all station to Middlesborough. Anything in between should be request stops as it would offer a decent enough service in the morning so to offer a decent connection to places of emplyment in Middlesborough.

A good idea in theory but it would require a long early ECS run or stabling a 185 (and a crew!) overnight in Whitby. Probably no less secure than anywhere else in the North East but it would be awkward to arrange. I suppose it could work like the (now discontinued) use of a 185 to Barton-On-Humber, but would still need TPE crews to learn the road or Northern crews to learn the units.

Surely it makes more sense to fiddle with a Northern diagram (there's an 0850 arrival at present) than try and get TPE to run to Whitby?

Is this going to be a new station that misses it's forecast?

Tees Valley Metro as a brand has been quietly dropped because of the connotations with a Light Rail scheme that is not going to be arriving.

Wishing to test the waters on current matters, I rang Northern Rail in their Leeds station eyrie yesterday about how their services will be serving the James Cook University Hospital, as their new timetables will be out in the middle of next month.

I had a feeling that the person to whom I spoke had no knowledge whatsoever of this new station and when it would be open to receive services, as I was put on hold for five minutes....then the line went dead..<(

Bad news for anyone that uses the 0732 York to Middlesborough then, as this currently forms the inbound working that then forms the 0850 departure that I suspect you're looking when thinking of an 0830 arrival. Whitby does need a better service, but I don't think this is the answer.

Exactly! Much more sensible than gettng a 185 down there and essentially taking it (and crew!) out of revenue earning service for some time!

Supposedly they are expecting 813 passenger journeys per day. This is 50 passengers getting on or off each train (expected to be 16)

See page 18

https://www.teesvalleyunlimited.gov.uk/media/92067/lstf_tees_valley_rail_access.pdf

Am I the only one who thinks this is incredibly optimistic? That is 200,000 entries and exits per annum (based on Monday to Friday) and 20 times the number from Marton down the road.

The figures might be reasonable if the service was frequent enough to be a real alternative to the car but its a two-hourly (irregular) headway. Why would anyone give up their car for the prospect of their appointment running late and then having to wait two hours for the next train?

It changes to the 0718 in a couple of weeks and I am going to have to completely rework my trips to the other office if I want to be there for 9. I need to get up earlier, get an earlier bus and get a much longer taxi journey at the other end now. It's all for the good of the country though.

But to be honest, if there was an earlier train I could get from Leeds I would take it.

I take it Platform end ramps are not bothered with now?
As long as steps are provided.

The platform entrance seems to be at the middle, with ramps parallel with the track. This matches the layout at East Didsbury and Heald Green.

Aren't the end-steps for staff only?

No longer required by Rail Group standards. The change was made about 5 or 6 years ago, but I suspect some projects already in progress had already been designed with ramps so it is only in the last year or two that 'transom ends' have become commonplace on all new work.

Those photos (thanks) give me a shiver when I think of some vulnerable person using that station, if there are not many folk about. Perhaps the images make it look more intimidating, isolated and remote than it is, or will be?

I am sure they will.

Whether it's of use maybe a different matter.

Hartlepool and Billingham ok, but Darlington Northallerton Redcar are awful connections

Thank you for this information. I now wonder if the hospital are aware of this, as many larger hospitals are very good in having up-to-date travel information for visitors.

Paul - the following was issued by South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust today...

New rail halt

The new James Cook University Hospital rail station will operational from Sunday 18 May 2014.

It is on the Esk Valley line that connects Middlesbrough and Whitby, via Nunthorpe. The service will be operated by Northern Rail.

It also seems to be the headline news on their home page as well. They've included a picture of the luxurious rolling stock...

Well, they don't want to over-sell it, do they? At least now passengers will be pleasantly surprised when a 156 turns up!

Purely being pedantic, they are factually incorrect as according to the new Table 45, there is one train in each direction that misses out Marton. ;)

The NRT shows an almost hourly service (one train missing mid-morning) from roughly 0700-2100

Indeed so. Reduction in service to Whitby by 75%

Does the franchise system allow such changes?

Pictures of station open (and nearly finished) taken yesterday here:
James Cook Station has opened for service on Sunday 18th May. The first Northern Rail service arrived at 08.49 and the local radio station BBC Tees were live as it pulled in. The radio reporter interviewed the first passenger from Middlesbrough to get off at the new station.

Bit unusual to include the word 'station' on the name boards though isn't it?

As long as the TOC provide the minimum specified service at a station they can do whatever they like. So presumably Northern are meeting their requirements if not they'd be in breach of contract with the DfT.
