What's the quickest way to get to the other underground lines from the northern line?

Is it to use the lifts or to leave the line via the new ticket level and walk above the ground to the old ticket hall

In the case of the Victoria Line, if you're changing Southbound to Southbound or Northbound to Northbound, stay on one more stop to Euston and double-back, as it's cross platform there.

You'll need to be a bit more specific in asking which other line you want to get to. But the new ticket hall is the right answer to very few questions.

Yes - absolutely. The "southern" end of the Victoria Line, Piccadilly Line and Northern Line platforms [that's southern as in overall line direction, not literally as per geography, since 2 of them are nearly east-west through that station] all have close connections with one another. From the Picc (which is in the middle) it's down a short escalator to the Northern, or up a few stairs to the Victoria.

If in doubt, start by following the signs to the Met/Circle/H&C lines, and watch for signs to the other lines you want before going upstairs to those sub-surface ones.

And the route to the sub-surface lines - and then up to the street once you're up to the ticket hall en route - is the most straightforward to the outside world in general, and to the mainline stations.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
+1 for the old ticket hall option. The northern ticket hall and the corridor from hell are great if you're striving for your 10k steps in a day, but otherwise stick with the old. Your life will be easier.

For every other line you’re better off using the escalators at the south end of the Northern line platforms. These escalators take you to Piccadilly line level whereby you can turn right for a staircase to the Vic. For the Sub-surface lines you go left off the escalators and then back on yourself
for another bank of escalators to the Tube ticket hall, from which you can find a passageway to the Sub-surface.

I rarely arrive at Kings Cross on the Northern, so I'm not sure how many people are misled by the signage into going a long way round - presumably quite a few. But it is obvious from times I use the Victoria that lots of non-locals amongst the arrivals on that line look for signs and head off "the wrong way", ending up with a long and unnecessary trek on their way to other lines or KX main line.
