It looks like Leeds are having some challenges today with the screens - I arrived at the station a short while ago to find all the boards in various states of reboot, the odd manual announcement and a fair bit of confusion. Luckily the station is currently relatively quiet.

The only board I saw showing any departures (on the new assistance pod) had no platforms.

Luckily I’d checked RTT on the bus in and had a good idea where I needed to be.

Do major stations retain old-fashioned portable blackboards (or whiteboards) that can be pressed into service with departure and platform details written on and updated?

They generally have staff in specific areas, such as information or ticket booths. These are clearly signposted and staff are happy to help, often having information that is more complete and up to date than the interweb or apps.

By the time I entered at 1620 from the south entrance the ones I passed were working.
Everything was normal when I returned through this evening, too
The only board I saw showing any departures (on the new assistance pod) had no platforms.
It transpired that even tonight, this screen had no platforms listed, so is maybe still a work in progress

London Marylebone recently had a good while without the main boards working. They used whiteboards and some smaller portable screens and deployed extra staff

One does hope in those circumstances there would be more than the 'odd manual announcement' though.

I am not sure about anywhere else however I can confirm that both Chester and Wolverhampton have whiteboards as I have seen them in use at both stations when there was a similar situation to what was mentioned in post #1.

Laptop with internet access, connect large monitor, Real Time Trains full screen, sorted

Although having said that the gateline at Leeds is considerably larger than the shed and 2 barriers it used to be so maybe 2 or 3 laptops

Fair point ! :D

God it used to be an awful place… some say it still is! I wonder if anything remains of the subway or did it get completely filled in during the rebuild. Not the finest of 60s architecture!

Still there I understand. It's a suspended bridge in the dark arches, so they couldn't fill it in !

That’s why I was wondering really, having been down in the tunnels underneath I couldn’t really understand how it all fit together. Weren’t there toilets down in that subway as well, could have just emptied them straight into the river :s

Apologies, bit off topic really but it is quite a interesting and complicated structure

I wonder if you can see any of these structures from the Dark Arches? I might have a wander through there when I'm in Leeds next.

A whiteboard in bi-lingual action at Neath

There were (they were pretty grim) but I'm not sure whether they drained straight into the Aire

London Marylebone recently had a good while without the main boards working. They used whiteboards and some smaller portable screens and deployed extra staff
The specialist network switch that connects all the screens together failed, in this case. The provider (Ketech) took a while sourcing a replacement and then even longer getting a tech to site to configure it
