A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Sorry Paul - travelling beyond the buffers (stone wall, High Barn Road, and properties included) does not fit the original question :-P

Very good...:D

However, my original list of journeys were just some that I recalled in the Manchester area from the mid-1950's onwards and I forgot to mention some in the North Wales area that I was fortunate to have travelled upon:-

Gaerwen to Amlwch
Bangor to Caernarfon
Bangor to Llanberis

There was a holiday journey made at the age of 14 from Manchester to the Butlin's holiday camp at Pwllheli via Bangor and Afon Wen in 1959 that was with my aunt and uncle. My first and last visit to a Butlin's establishment..

Fleetwood Wyre Dock-Poulton le fylde, Haltwhistle-Alston, Newcastle-South Shields,Manchester Victoria-Bury latter two both metro/tramway East Lancs Lines out of Preston. Whats yours !.

Altrincham - Manchester by DMU ex Chester. Not being around in Beeching era I don't think I can claim anything else.

Nonetheless I've been recently surprised that these sorts of closures were going on as late as the 80s. A place called Kilmacolm in Scotland apparently had an hourly commuter service to Glasgow then 1983 got completely closed. Then the Paisley Canal to Glasgow section of the route was reopened in 1990. wtf was that all about?
Doubtless the wonderful Maggie was indirectly responsible for this....

Strathclyde PTE wouldn't support the route in the early 80s as patronage was quite low and so as there was no support, BR instigated closure procedures. In the late 80s, Strathclyde viewed things differently and were prepared to support the Paisley Canal route so it reopened, though most of the line was in place due to an oil terminal at Hawkshead. Beyond Canal station, the formation had be built over so an extension back to Elderslie Junction and Kilmacolm wasn't considered feasible.

In the early 1980s there were a number of line closures as BR were starved of investment and passenger numbers were then falling. We have seen recently a number of lines/stations reopen which have now thrived.
Stratford- Tottenham Hale closed in 1985 since reopened and later this year the intermediate station of Lea Bridge will reopen.
Broad Street line closed in 1986 and part reopened in 2011.
and finally...
threatened with closure was Settle- Carlisle..!!!! the rest is history............

1) Sellafield – Egremont.
Although closed to passenger traffic in 1947, there was a line from Sellafield to Whitehaven Corkickle via Egremont that was still open to freight. It was easier to hire a train to transport 400-odd screaming brats from Seascale to the local secondary school at Egremont than a fleet of buses, which they did from September 1964 till about 1968. I rode on this line for 2 years, and remains my most travelled line.

2) Leamington Spa Avenue – Rugby
This was a local Coventry – Leamington – Rugby service that was a push-pull of some description. A little of the line still exists at Rugby.

3) Keswick or Cockermouth (don’t recall which) – Workington
This was a day out in the early 1960’s.

4) Stratford – North Woolwich

5) The Edinburgh Sub (Waverley – Portobello – Morningside – Slateford)
When the electrification was extended from Carstairs to Edinburgh, the line from Slateford to Waverley had to be closed to lower some of the track to make room for the electric string. So, they routed the Carlisle services via the Sub.

6) Bescot – Wolverhampton
Don’t know why, but, on a Birmingham – Glasgow train (which was electric), we left New Street EASTWARDS and went via Aston and Bescot, rejoining the line just south of Wolverhampton.

7) Stockport – Reddish South – (near Ashton, Park?) – Manchester Victoria
This was a WCML diversion.

8) Blackburn – Clitheroe – Hellifield
Before it recently-ish reopened – another diversion

9) Gateshead, immediately opposite Newcastle Central Station and the High Level Bridge
I’ve done this twice, north- and south-bound. One was a 91/82 combo going southwards and an HST set on a Saturday run to Inverness. In both cases, it was to get the 1st class coaches at the right end, and NOT a diversion.

I have only managed part of the West Croydon-Wimbledon line - I have definitely done West Croydon to Waddon Marsh, and I might have gone a bit further as well, but I'd need to think about it; Addiscombe to Elmers End (in that direction only: walked from East Croydon to Addiscombe, then returned to East Croydon via Elmers End, London Bridge and the main line on a One Day Travelcard issued on a handwritten Excess pad ticket ... not bad for £1.60!); and North Woolwich-Stratford. All of those journeys were within a couple of months of each other in 1997.

Still think of the Leamside line whenever I'm down that way, so many wonderful diversions on Sundays during the ECML electrification works. Happy memories of peeking my head out of the HST windows going over the crossing at Fencehouses

Is that (or not) the line that brances left a little after Durham when heading south to eventually reach Stockton? I honestly can't think what that line's called if owt in particular, but it's one I've done on a diverted HST back in February 2006. Took frigging forever!

Like a lot of people, Stratford Low Level to North Woolwich is one I did. Was on the last train in and last one out too. Probably the only line I've covered that's now extinct from the regular network. Some bits and bobs like the connecting line at Norton Fitzwarren onto the West Somerset Railway (it was once on the national network, even if many years ago!) I did on that FGW charity special in 2008. Then the connection to the SVR at Kidderminster (was this indeed once part of the national network?) was on the LM 150 Farewell in 2011. Yeovil Pen Mill to Yeovil Junction on diverted FGW HSTs in December 2007 I think.

Other than that, the Oldham Loop is one I did way before closure was announced. Edinburgh Suburban Line is another, from both the Livingston direction and the Dalmeny direction. From Dalmeny on an XC HST in December 2008, from Livingston on the 2011 ALR on an XC Voyager.

Can't think of much else straight away, unless the Castle Donnington line (done wayyyyyy back in 2004) was once a passenger line. Plenty of preserved lines of course, but can't be bothered to list them all too!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Ely avoider (though i believe there is a service on a Sunday still uses it.)

Yes, 1550 Norwich to Manchester Piccadilly or Liverpool Lime Street. Unless it's changed since I did it but it's almost always been that time give or take a couple of minutes.

Moorgate - Farringdon

I'd forgotten about that one!

Someone else mentioned Bescot to Wolverhampton, which reminds me of Oxley Curve but that may not have been ever a passenger route. Middlewich is another that comes to mind, VWC diversions in January 2009 for that one and Oxley Curve. Bescot to Wolverhampton several times for me, most recent I remember is on a VWC 221 on diversion on day 14 of the 14 day ALR in 2012.

Need to get the atlas out I think...

Slight tangent, are there any plans to close/convert any more lines right now? (Wondering what I should travel on to actually get an entry in this list, don't think I've been on any ;))

Watford to Croxley (LU Metropolitan line) will close when Croxley Link line opens in a couple of years time.

For me I can only think of Wareham to Swanage 1969, and Weymouth Quay branch in 1976/7.....but I'm now motivated to go through a million old records and photo's to try to find some more!

Ah, of course - I've done that a couple of times (as well as using the Rickmansworth curve!), thankfully.

If I’d been born 5 or 10 years earlier, I would probably have done many more lines before Beeching, but mine is a short list of short lines in the North West.

• Agecroft Jct – Brindle Heath Jct (Bolton to Manchester Victoria stopping trains via Pendleton).
• Cheetham Hill Loop.
• Cornbrook Jct – Deansgate Jct (Altrincham line in 25kV era).
• OA&GB Jct - Ashton Moss South Jct (the York - Shrewsbury Postal ran this way between Stalybridge and Stockport, rather than via Guide Bridge)
• Oldham Loop (I made a special trip for this in 1985, mainly to ride on a shiny, new-fangled DMU called a Pacer).

Other lines, probably outside OP’s criterion, which are still in place but not used by regular passenger trains are:-
• Liverpool Central Low Level to James Street (original Mersey Railway line, now used as Merseyrail Stock Interchange Line and reversing siding).
• Guide Bridge to Stockport (in this direction).
• Newton-le-Willows Jct – Lowton Jct – Golborne Jct in this direction. (Northern’s parliamentary-style train between Wigan NW and Liverpool Lime St via Earlestown has only run southbound since elimination of through Liverpool – Glasgow/Edinburgh services)
