Hi all,

I'll be completing my video interview soon. Any tips, as this is my first one? What sort of questions are there - the usual ones?

Thanks
Honestly its not that bad you know, you'll get the hang of it. Tip :You get two chances, so if you ain't confident with your first try, you'll have 3 minutes before you can press 'record again so utilise that time to recalibrate whatever you want to say before pressing 'record again'

It’s more personal experience based questions. I fumbled a few sentences unfortunately, I don’t know how much that goes against you :/

Yeah I think its more key attributes they look in what you saying rather than how many terms you fumble on words, nerves is expected

A question for people who may have worked for LNER before, after training do you have a choice of which rolling stock you operate on? Do you specialise in just one? Or trained on a few?
i know they operate the Azumas but also the Class 91 Intercity 225

Good luck!

May I ask how you prepared for the interview? Also, the competency-based questions, is it the usual, tell me about a... etc.?

You’ll sign class 800x (Azuma) and class 91 (Mk4)

Personally, nothing specific, kinda took a guess at questions which often come up in a normal interview and then if something came up then I could use it

Honestly it’s not a personal dig at anyone specific but I can’t believe the amount of people asking for the interview questions. I have nothing against anyone in here and wish everyone the best but at the same time I am competing with everyone for the job. Why would I tell someone what the questions are giving them an advantage over myself/everyone else. My interview wasn’t great but I gave it my best shot on the day, surely that’s all anyone can do.

This was going to be my response too. The competition won’t want to help you no matter how many times they ask

People should remember that we are all competing for roles here. So for those asking for what questions come up in the video interview, it would be counter-intuitive to provide that information. Just give it your best shot!

Can I add to this by saying if we could stop the same with private messages as well. By all means, all the best but I’ve had 2 ask me for the questions in the past 8 hours. Gets a bit much. Like just give it a go, if you pass you pass, if not then you don’t

Some of the attitudes on this thread are bizarre- failing the initial tests so reapplying under a different email address to try again until you pass them? Would be trivially easy for LNER to sift candidates after the video interview based on previous applications. If you can't pass the easiest bit of the application process without fudging the system, you're really going to struggle as things go on...

What everyone has to remember is that, these companies receive hundreds if not thousands of applicants for this type of role, and they only have a certain amount of spaces. Any chance to weed out the undesirable candidates will be used I imagine.

After completing each test I got a referal to the next. Im assuming had I messed up on any of them I wouldnt have been able to take the next one?

I must admit I have watched a few topics descend into this.

I want to throw in my tuppence, which I do so with the greatest respect and best wishes to those who want to get this job…

To become a train driver is these days so incredibly competitive, and therefore people who do get past stages reserve the right to say nothing. But for those following, you need to organically go through the process yourself. This goes for every company, and every different method of recruitment as they all seem to do different things.

And as for falsely applying under a second name or email address, well, if you are struggling at this level the psychometric tests may well get you a lot quicker.

Please folks, do your own work. Copying off your classmate always ends badly.

Have to agree with a lot of comments regarding those asking for the interview questions. When any TOC puts you in a cab, they're placing a significant responsibility on your shoulders and would you want your friends and family on a train who is being driven by someone who has passed the assessment partially because they've found out exactly what HR and the driver managers want to hear?

The process is designed in a way that you either have what they're looking for or you don't. I understand that it's upsetting especially considering that it's a highly paid position but that seems to have worked against the grade in recent years, particularly when it comes to attitude and entitlement. Sorry if this seems harsh but it's just how things are. The recent operational incident stats speak for themselves in my opinion. I stress the aforementioned "opinion."

I'll now duck for cover.

I suspect if you have passed then your application is reviewed by a human being who works something similar to office hours. I did my tests on a Friday night and got an invite email on Monday.

From what I've seen on this forum so far, if you fail any of the tests you're notified promptly. No news is good news.

Just a quick question, how long do you get to answer each question in the video interview? I suspect the time flies and my concern is spending too long explaining the context of my answers.

I've done a few video interviews. Make sure the camera is at eyeline you'll probably have to put your laptop on a couple of books to achieve this. Try to look directly at the camera, not easy to do. Remember that the vast majority of people will feel just as uncomfortable as you do so people viewing the video will know this.

What would the next step be for those that are successful in the interview?
