Hi.

Looking for some advice about the cheapest way of travelling by train from London Kings X to Newcastle Central.

Should I split my ticket? If so, where?

Any other advice gratefully received.

Mr Beard.

London KX to Newcastle Central
No specific times/dates, but will be travelling off peak, booking around 2 weeks in advance.
No railcards. (not eligable)
Can be flexible.

The cheapest will be an Advance ticket, and I would advise booking earlier than 2 weeks in advance if at all possible.

A less popular train such as the 22:00 out of King's Cross should be affordable at 2 weeks' notice, providing it's a Monday-Thursday. I chose a date at random (16 Aug) and the fare is £15.00 inc online discount. For 2 weeks' notice, that is as cheap as you will get!

Previous topics:

Through tickets are cheaper, unless there is an event or passenger flow that has caused many people to book the quota up for a particular segment of the journey, in which case splitting may help. Some advice about where splitting may be beneficial was posted in an earlier thread:

As I book myself tickets for exactly that journey regularly, and always intending to remain on the same EC train thoughout, I have often managed to save a few pounds by splitting at Peterborough (but not always), or occasionally at Grantham or Newark, but never by looking at splits anywhere further north than that.

If you do, take care to ensure you are booing yourself onto the same train, as the Leeds and Newcastle services are often just 3 or so minutes apart!

Make sure you use the East Coast site to book, do not use other sites as only EC give their web discount.

get the grand central to sunderland and the metro from there?

Or Grand Central to York and change there. (Or perhaps GC or HT to Doncaster and change there)

A couple of further points:

1. If you must book close to the date to travel, then you can sometimes save by splitting your advance tickets at Doncaster, or York, or York and Newark. Doncaster usually provides the best savings: to take tomorrow for example, your cheapest option to Newcastle (other than on the 22:00 departure) is the £54.85 super-off peak single. By contrast you can do it for £39 by taking the 11:48 Hull Trains service to Doncaster (£20 advance) then the 14:19 Cross Country train from Doncaster to Newcastle (£19 advance). The catch is that you have to spend just short of an hour at Doncaster station. Whether or not that is worth the while probably depends on your financial situation! Usually, to be honest with you, the savings aren't that high and its not worth the changing of trains and added waiting, but my example shows it can be done.

2. It's worth being aware of Grand Central's train service to Sunderland. They will do you an off-peak single to Sunderland for £49, which you can buy on the train, on the day of travel, or an £84 return, which again requires no booking. They also often have sales or offers with cheaper fares. They don't do advance tickets, but rumour has it that they might be starting. Anyway, it's another option if you have to/need to travel but can't book. Note that they only run 4 trains a day in each direction, and only three on which you can travel off-peak.

If you're splitting at Doncaster, then Grand Central's £15 Summer Sale offers walk-on fares of £15 single between Kings Cross and Doncaster on its 3 trains each way daily.

I suspect these trains will be very busy.
