Looks like my wallet was nicked on the tube home today. I'm looking to do a journey tomorrow on a off peak open return rail ticket to carlisle, which I haven't bought yet.

I bought it online. I've got a crime reference number but I won't get it replaced in time.

Is there any leeway in this? It's nearly £40 difference without it. I hear VTEC is slightly more flexible - is it worth going to newcastle and getting off there?

Sorry to hear about your wallet being stolen.

There is no formal policy of discretion in this sort of situation and I wouldn't recommend making the journey if you're not carrying your railcard.

I would purchase a new railcard at the station if I were you.

Can't really help with this, but it has been said on here that you can use any card to collect a ticket at a TVM, but I tried last week and using another card came back with 'no booking found'.

Hopefully others can help more. Good luck!

Maybe it's worth calling ATOC's railcard customer services number? 0345 3000 250 – their site says you can phone this number to order a replacement of a railcard purchased online. Perhaps where time is of the essence there's something they could do like authorising a manned ticket office to produce one on-the-spot. Who knows, but it's probably worth a shot.

You might be reading this too late but I would go online now and see if there are any advance tickets on offer either between Euston and Carlisle or Kings Cross and Newcastle; they may work out to be your cheaper option without a railcard.

If I were you I would order a new railcard through ATOC because you can get this for a cheaper cost with a crime reference number. They would also deliver it to any address you give at the time of reordering so it could be sent up to Carlisle for you to use on your return journey (i.e. if you were travelling back on say an advance single).

If you do end up traveling on a full fare ticket, I would keep hold of the tickets, your crime reference number (and any paperwork) along with the replacement railcard. You could send this (of course not the actual railcard but a copy of it and the receipt as this will show it was a replacement one for one that was stolen) into Virgin (either East or West Coast whoever you end up travelling with) and ask them if as a goodwill gesture if, given you were the victim of a crime that has been reported to the police, they would be willing and kind enough to refund the difference between the railcard and non railcard fare. I have found Virgin West Coast to be very reasonable and helpful when there have been legit circumstances. They may be more willing to do that too if you say you would be happy to accept Rail Travel Vouchers (hint!)

If you are "lucky" enough that one (or both) of your services are delayed by 30 minutes or more then you would get some of the money back through delay repay too - yes in RTVs but you can use those to add onto your Oyster card too so could use it right away. Also, if time is not of the essence how about - as a one off - you see what fares you can get on Megabus (and National Express - not sure if they service Carlisle though).

Hope this helps you find something of an affordable fare!

Jon - I think the OP means the railcard was bought online. Ticket not yet purchased :)

Yeah, just realised the subject refers to railcard. I thought it was a ticket booked online that couldn't be collected!

you could buy a new card and then get a refund for the train ticket once they issue with one. one of my friends also was in the same situation and did that.

I ended up getting up ok without it. I shown the train manager before I boarded the order confirmation of my railcard online ages ago, which still had validity and the crime reference number and email from the police and explained the situation. He wrote me a note for use after the crew change at preston and also for my return journey.

The Train Manager(s) (accounting for the crew change at Preston again) on the return journey can still totally refuse to accept this and insist you purchase a new ticket. Use your crime reference number to order a replacement railcard (there is a reduced cost if you have a crime reference number) and have to deliver it to your address up North if there is still time. If you really want to change it again, I'd speak to the Train Manager on the platform before boarding again.
