Loud music commuters on Underground

I often take an early Underground train around 7 am to the City ( Central London ) and often find at least one commuter every morning listening to their music loudly , even though they are using headphones ( God bless their ears ..NOT ! )

Now, what is the right way of dealing with these types of uncivilized commuters?
-Do I walk up to them and say "Can you turn down your music please, mate ? "
What if I get verbal abuse or get punched or knifed ?
-Do I play my own music loudly to ruin their music experience , forcing them to get off. ( e.g. Rick Astley's Never gonna give you up OR God save the queen )
-How about using a Footie air horn next to their ears?

Personally, I would love to grab them by the neck and kick them off the train ( literally ) but that would be classed as asault and CCTV would capture that!

I just get a good pair of in-ear earbuds. Blocks out the more annoying noises, and means you can listen to something you want without disturbing others.

Maybe they should bring back those posters you used to see in many London tube carriages about 15 -20 years ago simply saying "KEEP YOUR PERSONAL STERIO PERSONAL"

I quite often just pop my in ear headphones in and they do enough to block things without even needing to play anything one them.

I've found that the only way of dealing with unwanted noise - whether it's on the tube or in the so-called "quiet" carriages on intercity trains - is to put in your own earbuds and block out the world. It's by far the least stressful option.

I always wonder why people have to wear full-sized earephones, which are not only quite large and heavy but are designed for hi-fi systems rather than small in-ear ones. I really couldn't be bothered carting those large ones around while out and about. I nhave a very nice in-ear set that I use when out about or on the train and they give excellent sound quaity, while keeping outside sounds at bay. Whether in-ear or large earphones you certanly don't want the volume so high that others hear the music. You are going to get serious titanus very quickly and that damge is with you forever.

I sometimes like to listen to my music loud on the train.

But I invested the small sum £7 for earphones which will hurt my ears if turned up beyond about 70%

And even at 100% volume the person sat right next to me won't hear a thing.

So when I find I have to turn my music up to drown out the sound of someone else's sat several rows away much tutting ensues.

Could they be using a set of open back headphones? these are notoriously leaky even at normal levels

I sometimes wear in headphones but not listen to music to stop people bullying me. if they think I cant hear them they dont make rude comments.

The noise isolating types usually come with small, medium and large buds in various materials. My Sony ones have rubber, rubber/foam and silicone (so 9 variants in all, you have to have very odd ears for one of them not to work). They cost about 50 quid but are worth every penny. The foam backed buds block out other music really well but allow enough ambient sound to pick up PA announcements.

It's such a shame about the times we live in. Instead of confronting people, we have to let them behave the way they want to and take extra steps to endure it.

I honestly really really really want to try the Horn idea!

Personally, I don't let it get to me. It's no more annoying than other things, like an armpit in your face, someone sneezing on you or some of the conversations I hear in the morning. I really dislike the smell of the awful perfume that some middle aged female commuters wear, but I can't really tell them to put less on in the morning.

We all have enough stress in our lives, enough problems, enough things to worry about every day that get us worked up. I'd rather people didn't play music loud, but I'm certainly not going to get stressed over it.

If my headphones were leaking enough noise to annoy fellow travellers I would rather they politely told me, although I can well understand why people don't do so in general.

The people in question might just want to share there music with you but you should be able just to ask them politely to turn it down

I find Apple in-ear headphones are the worst offenders. They leak so much sounds, cheap POS.
I've heard lots of people say this, but I have, on a number of occasions, turned the music right up to top volume on the train, taken them out, and I can hear nothing. [And it's not my hearing either as I've recently undertaken a medical for work and my hearing came in the top band :p]

To be honest, these days I'm grateful if the passenger is actually using headphones, albeit loudly, rather than playing the music out loud through the device's speaker.

Same here. I often think to myself "this is rather loud, it might be annoying someone". Take them out - nothing.

I do love my earphones

Have seen people watching films on laptops without earphones in as well - how selfish can you get?

Kids playing electronic/iPad games are the worst offenders round my way. This phenomenon seems to have made it on to aeroplanes as well, and is about as welcome as Jimmy Saville in a creche.
