An interesting conversation that came up recently, and nobody could be certain of the answer. Only one place to go to settle it!

Tickets for cross London journeys, bearing the 'Maltese Cross'. My understanding has always been that they're simply encoded 'zone U1', and would theoretically permit any journey within the zone (or indeed which started and ended within the zone)? I'm not aware of any LUL system of permitting only certain termini? It was suggested that a passenger venturing off route during their transfer would encounter barrier issues, but I would expect their ticket to allow them through unhindered; not withstanding staff intervention of course.

Can anyone clarify this little debate! :D

as far as i am aware, the gatelines are set up that these tickets only work at NR interchange stations. (they also work outside zone one at places like Kentish Town.) Gatelines at non NR interchange stations will reject these tickets.

Gatelines will reject these tickets if not at an interchange station. I know this because I had one rejected at Warren Street quite recently, when I was attempting to have a refreshing beverage at the Bree Louise before my train avoid the queues at Euston.

They definitely aren't coded for everywhere in Zone 1, as shown over the years in this forum people have posted that the barriers have prevented them from exiting for an intended break of journey midway between interchange stations.

But the list of interchange stations is much wider than the periphery of zone 1 in any case, there's a list of 55 locations on NRES: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46587.aspx#travelling_connect

You can find out more in Section 7.3 of our Fares & ticketing guide
http://www.railforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1315636

It will work the barriers at any of the stations listed. However you may finish short at any intermediate station on a reasonable route, OR at any station in Zone 1. It won't work at other stations as they are not programmed to accept them (except possibly Hammersmith, I've never tried), so you will need to "Seek Assistance," and ask to be let out. You won't be allowed to enter at any other stations however, although staff at certain locations have been permitted to exercise discretion (e.g. walking from Charing + to Leicester Sq to catch the Piccadilly line).
