Makes a change from trees on the line.

A suspected burglar who climbed up a tree to evade police has caused disruption to commuters in London.

The fugitive climbed the tree near Charlton station, south-east London, after being tracked by officers and a police helicopter.

British Transport Police (BTP) have been trying to persuade the man to come down from the tree near Barney Close.

However, rail operator Southeastern said it was too dangerous to continue running trains in the area.

A BTP spokesman said: "The man is currently still on the scene, and specialist officers are talking to him in order to resolve the situation."

It is understood the man ran off following an attempted burglary at a retail park at about 02:00 BST.

Southeastern said it was not safe to run services while the man was refusing to come down.

A spokeswoman said: "Clearly, while this person remains in the tree, which overhangs the line that runs into London, it wouldn't be safe for us to run trains in the area."

After the initial closure the train operator was able to run trains out of London.

A Charlton burglary suspect fled from police along railway lines and climbed up into a tree, causing the closure of part of the Greenwich line and widespread Southeastern trains disruption.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service are still at the scene, trying to talk the man down.

Police were called to reports of an attempted burglary at a unit in Stone Lake Retail Park at 1.50am this morning (August 13).

News Shopper:

On arrival officers identified a suspect and began a pursuit which also involved the Met Police helicopter, during which the man was observed running close to rail lines.

The suspect subsequently climbed a tree overhanging the rail lines off Barney Close. He is still there.

A spokesman for British transport Police said: “Our officers were called to a trespass incident near Charlton station at 2am on August 13, after reports of a man on the tracks.

“Colleagues from the Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service are also in attendance.

“The man is currently still on the scene, and specialist officers are talking to him in order to resolve the situation.”

Train passenger Joanne Stone tweeted that commuters were being told by the driver to look out for the man as they passed, like a guided tour.

She said: "Obviously didn't do a good job of hiding then as the driver was pointing him out!"

The commuter went on: "I had headphones in but he definitely said to look, just like a tour, "If you look to your left now...."

They should have left him up there and went and hid until he thought they had gone and then come down.

Or sent a copper upthere to hold him chained to the branches until service ended.

Why did they need to close the line? Couldn't trains just have passed the site at slow speed?

Just said on the news that the idiot was being advised about special stretching exercises whilst up the tree.

18 hours spent worrying he might fall down, health and safety once again strikes pure comedy gold.

Only here would we indulge an idiot criminal up a tree.

What has that got too do with Health & Safety I have never seen it the legislation or is it listed in the Polices procedure do dealing with someone up a tree-I doubt it-?Or is it another throwaway Daily Mail style comment.
H&S is a wonderful thing and one I'm glad of imagine without it you would have too work in a life threatening work place for any hour the management decided. The Trains, roads and pavement could be used in any condition to save costs

It's usually a lazy comment by organisations who are passing the buck and cannot be bothered to unsure the Health and Safety of anyone and are just looking for an excuse to not do something.

Every workplace has a H&S poster on the wall please show the bit which mentions this?
