So my friend who drives for Arriva has been told their contract to run the replacement bus services has been extended through August. Workmen are still on site at Stewartby every day and have been for months now.

What on Earth is going on?

Bletchley-Bedford, like Watford Junction-St Albans, has been replacement buses ever since the countrywide timetables went into emergency mode for COVID-19.

That it gives the orange army extra time to do maintenance and upgrades is, perhaps, a serendipitous side-effect.

Given the issues with the crossings, is there a reason why the new stock moves go thus way, especially as the LEs return via other routes?

i suspect it is for operational ease and available paths. No run rounds. The line is so quiet right now that the stock moves have zero impact on anything.

There was a lot of track work last weekend on the branch so that may improve things.
