There only seems to be one 777 out on the Ormskirk lines today. Have there been further issues? Definitely missing out on the air conditioning in this weather!
In Liverpool today so I'll have a look later.

It appears 777s are running to Kirkby as I'm on it and but none so far to Ormskirk...

Noticed at Kirkdale 14.26 to Ormskirk is cancelled.

So far from my observation no 777 is running to Ormskirk, only Kirkby, I took the opportunity at Kirkby to have a look at the Headbolt extension, the tracks are physically connected just a temporary metal fence separating the two.

End report.

Two of the five booked six car formations on the Southport line are short-formed this afternoon, presumably at least in part due to the latest 777 debacle. The shortened 1713 Liverpool Central to Hunts Cross is terribly overcrowded in the searing heat

The network is in disarray at the moment.

There was a 777 passing through Maghull this morning on an Ormskirk service so one was running - guess it got taken out!

Nothing to do with 777’s, track circuit failure meant units trapped in the sidings at Southport.

My source tells me the reason that the 777s are not out in great numbers today is due to the Air Conditioning units failing and the passengers literally baking inside the train.

The one I rode on today was fine.

Some units are probably still going through their teething troubles and the weather has been very testing no doubt.

Either that or rail replacement bus services in case of 777 failures
Really hope it doesn’t come to that. Though it is becoming very noticeable the strain on the current fleet. There’s a distinct lack of 6 cars and 777s which both aren’t ideal

Any sign of 777s taking more services as 2 more 507/508s go ?
The only guarantee is more 777s available to be used when Headbolt lane opens, and the battery units will finally be used, freeing up the normal units from the Kirkby line.

Seems like two 777s have already bitten the dust from the Ormskirk runs this morning. Both 2G25 and 2G26 taken out of service - 2G25 didn't even get started, and 2G26 cancelled at Walton.

According to Social Media. The train was severely overcrowded due to an earlier 777 going out of service. The driver was unable to close the doors due to the proximity of passengers.

After numerous unsuccessful attempts to close the doors a passenger had a “panic attack” and activated the emergency alarm.

That doesn't bode well for the future... if the service goes to pot, the first train along the line can be a sardine can. If the staff will have to ask people to get off to carry on and people are already delayed, I can see them refusing to leave which might need the police to clear the train.

To be fair, the situation wouldn’t have been much different if it had been two 507/508s. One service (the 0801 Ormskirk to Central, so a very busy one!) failed, then the one behind - itself already naturally busy - would be a massive strain.

Absolutely. It does seem odd that the 777s are having so many issues if we compare to many of the other Stadler units. The 777s can't be that different, can they?
They are part of a product family called 'Stadler METRO' which unlike other products is fully customisable.

It's whether there are additional sensors preventing the doors from closing. I've been on many overcrowded Merseyrail trains including with people stuffed in the cab vestibules but if sensors round the doors prevent them from sliding over people when it's busy it might be a problem.

Disabling the auto open feature would be a better option, in fact a no brainer once the door is closed and a few seconds to check all clear before moving off, it's far safer than a door opening at random, this should be overridden by the driver so it will remain closed.

The train is just a bit too clever for operating with the public.

On that point - there is. There’s a laser/reflector beam (akin to those in a lift) across the doorway that I could see being triggered if people are close to the door. I hadn’t noticed it until I saw a train manager waggle his foot to keep the door from closing when he was observing the platform.

I don't know if other UK FLIRTs have this, but I have been told off by a German FLIRT driver on Munich-Salzburg (she got out and walked down the train to do so) because I was preventing departure by standing in the way of it, with no clue I was doing so. She had to press a switch in the door pocket to override and close that door to depart. Might partly be because DOO works differently in Germany, though, you essentially wait for the doors to close themselves then press a button to lock, with the interlock being the main safety feature.

Not TOO dissimilar, but I as told to move away from the door on a crowded Pacer because I was distorting the floor.

Be interesting to see what comes it could be the rest of the 777/1.

They do need more over here quickly to replace the 507s and 508s so that is good!

Last night there were some Kirkby - Walton Junction 5Txx runs scheduled on RTT but only the first one ran after spending over two hours at Kirkby station. Perhaps something 777/1 related?

5T88 still appears to be “stuck” on the OTT map at Walton Junction and has been since yesterday now. Obviously no train is actually there as everything is flowing normally.

It appears that 777s are set to take over the Ormskirk line almost entirely in the next few days. Shows how far they have come in a couple of weeks :)
