Which units will likely go next after?
It depends on whether more 507s are withdrawn (and no more overhauls after 507003) - if so the likes of 507009, 507005, 507004, 507013, 507012 and 507026 are likely candidates.
In terms of 508s - 508127, 508138, 508115, 508111, 508117 and 508128 are probably amongst the next to go, based on the overhaul cycle.
All 508s have to be withdrawn by the end of this year, since they will be life expired and can't continue into 2024.

I think it was reported elsewhere that one more 507 is to be overhauled after 507003, presumably 005 or 009.

The next ones to go will surely be 508127 and 508138 as they are now the 508s longest since overhaul.

So, It’s safe to assume the last of the “old trains” to go will be Class 507 likely in first five units numerically? Is Merseyrail, keeping 507001 and 507002, a farewell tour in late 2024/early 2025:lol::smile:

It would be nice, if they were the last, to be honest, they were first of PEPs in Merseyrail to arrive in 78, it would so fitting if they were last to go?

Also, the Condemmed 507s, are at Hereford according to RealTime Trains.

That is interesting. Why do the 507s get to stay instead of 508s ? Albeit maybe just months or weeks.

Thanks for the info

I believe the 508s suffer from solebar corrosion, where as 507s either don't or to a lesser extent.

I think it will be 507001 and 507007 last to be withdrawn. Possibly 507003. Don't think 002, 004 or 005 will be amongst the last (unless 005 gets overhauled next).

While I was waiting at James St Stn I noted 507021, 508130 on passenger services aswell as 507014 & 508108 passing through platform 2 before proceeding onto the stock interchange line before 507016 pulled in on a chester service followed by 507012 to wallasey grove road which had taken me over to Liverpool after it picked me up from there at 11:57

Units so far have been withdrawn due to low remaining mileage to next required overhaul (except accident victims 507006 and 507019), not perceived poor external condition. 508124 was last overhauled around December 2019 so it should have plenty of time left; in fact, it could be amongst the last 508s to go.

Thanks to all who responded with their sightings of 508124. I managed to bag it as we crossed paths at the perfect time at Waterloo (helped by being an island platform) so they can all go to scrap now I've got what I wanted from them ;)

*just kidding, hoping to get plenty more mileage before they're all gone

507 014 (on southport line today 1/6) has, quite distinctly, the Blue Northern Line sign coming through on the unused destination indicator at one end. Many years since I saw that on display!

It's showing through on a few at the moment! If I remember rightly 005 is another one.

Hi guys, I'm contemplating a possibke trip over to Liverpool next week to get a few shots of the 507/8s, does anyone know roughly how many are in service? Basically, is it worth the 9 hour round trip? :D
Cheers

They are still on all lines basically. Sharing with 777s on Kirkby and Ormskirk but all the rest are completely 507s/508s :)

We were out and about yesterday in Merseyside- without trying too hard we saw about 2/3rds of the fleet (about 20 of each class + 10 x 777s). Except for a few parked up, the vast majority were working - so you shouldn't have too many problems getting a few shots.

I had forgotten about this. 508s but not 507s to lose ORR certification to carry passengers this year. This was a serious issue when it wasn’t known when or if the 777s could enter service.

A good question to ask is when were the units that have been scrapped after running out of miles last overhauled? Was the last 507 to be overhauled 507003 and are no further units to be overhauled?

Hamilton Square for the Wirral Lines - once they've been around the loop you can stay on the one incoming platform and get them that way.

Sandhills for Northern

Then you also want to travel past Birkenhead North depot (anything to West Kirby or New Brighton) and Kirkdale depot (anything to Ormskirk or Kirby)

Also:

Consider catching a xx15 train off Hamilton Square to West Kirby as far as Bidston - you'll get a chance to see what's working on the Wrexham service that hour

The ends of some lines have stabling - New Brighton, West Kirby and Southport I think. Traksy may show what's occupied.

And look out for any 5XXX headcodes appearing on Traksy going through, these are often doubled up sets going to depot/washing
