When did platform 5 at Southampton Central last see use?

Last night for stabling, like it does every night.

But I guess you mean for passenger service, in which case not since the last major resignalling in the station area, (whenever that was), at which time it was not provided with full signalling to passenger standards.

Heathrow Terminal 5 has platforms 3 and 4 for HEx services and platforms 5 and 6 for the Piccadilly Line. Platforms 1 and 2 were safeguarded for Airtrack but may see use if the Western Access opens.

Reassuring that it hasn't changed since posted on 1st Jan... :D

Oh, right. I assumed from what he said in that that they did.

I still want to know why Platform 7 at Norwood Junction is not being put back in. :(

Are they going to make East Croydon bigger too? Someone mentioned it the other day.

I believe the plan is to add another platform on the western side - 7, and passive provision left for an 8th when needed.

Stockport has a through platform 0 that's regularly used - access is from upstairs in the ticket hall, as opposed to the foot tunnel.
Also, between P3 and P4 there are two Manchester facing bays, one marked 3a, and another with the track lifted. What are/were these for?

There were IIRC some Stockport terminators from the Manchester direction a few years ago.
And, once upon a time, the Stalybridge service ran once an hour not once a week.
If you go back pre-Beeching, there were local services to Oldham and Manchester Victoria, and London trains that detached a portion there.

When I see the title of this thread 'Missing platforms and ... other bits' - why does Dawlish now spring to mind... :(

Which is the Western side... Where 7 is, or over where 1 is?

The track is pretty much N-S, so West is left looking from the main barrier line towards the platforms. IIRC that's 1?

[Norwood Jn turnback]

This was a development project for CP5, described in detail in the Sept 2011 CP5 proposals, but it is no longer mentioned in the early 2013 version, or in December's enhancement plan draft.

I wonder if, given that the main purpose was to save a '10 car train' of rolling stock in the morning peak, that it has been binned because the more recent rolling stock orders made it unnecessary...

Sorry, my bad. I suspect renumbering would be on the cards unless they were happy to add them out of sequence.

I think it's odd that they want to build the platforms on that side, as platform 7 just needs to be electrified, cleared of vegetation and lengthened to bring it back into use, and platform 8 is still in situ next to P7.

I think there may be some confusion between East Croydon and Norwood Jn here, which is fair enough as it has hardly been clear who is talking about what.

Let's trace it down to the first comment:

I believe this user was referring to ECR, so that means putting new platforms on the western side would be logical and should have been done earlier.

The new footbridge at East Croydon looks to have left enough space for a new island with tracks either side. The rather strange structure suggests it's a clear span right across with no intermediate structural supports, and if this is so it would also allow the existing platforms and tracks to be rearranged in the future.

I think there has been, so I've amended my quoting to suit...

I mean at Norwood Junction why have they scrapped re electrifying Platform 7?

As for East Croydon I did hear they might make the station bigger but not seen any plans or anything for it. It needs at least two more Platforms. Trains always get bottle necked there, especially Platform 4.

How are you going to expand East Croydron? Arent there buildings immediately adjacent the tracks on the southern side?

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Another station with unused platforms that is in my mind will be Springburn after the May timetable change.

At present, the Dalmuir/Balloch via Queen Street low level services start from/terminate in P3 or 4 (the terminal platforms), with the Queen Street high level to (what's it called?) Cumbernauld/Falkirk Grahamston services using the through P1 and 2.

Both of these services will be combined together when the electrification works are complete, with trains reversing in P1 towards Dalmuir and P2 to Cumbernauld.

With the exception of one or two peak hour services, this will make both P3 and 4 largely redundant in the normal service pattern. However, there may be scope for regular use again in the future should if Glasgow Crossrail gets up and running (My thoughts and fantasies anyway :)).

But aren't the main problems at East Croydon the junctions to the south that is the bottleneck? Not necessarily the platforms?
