Another station with unused platforms that is in my mind will be Springburn after the May timetable change.

At present, the Dalmuir/Balloch via Queen Street low level services start from/terminate in P3 or 4 (the terminal platforms), with the Queen Street high level to (what's it called?) Cumbernauld/Falkirk Grahamston services using the through P1 and 2.

Both of these services will be combined together when the electrification works are complete, with trains reversing in P1 towards Dalmuir and P2 to Cumbernauld.

With the exception of one or two peak hour services, this will make both P3 and 4 largely redundant in the normal service pattern. However, there may be scope for regular use again in the future should if Glasgow Crossrail gets up and running (My thoughts and fantasies anyway :)).

I think this is a temporary thing to release some capacity during rebuilding of Queen Street. When that is complete the through trains from QS to Cumbernauld should resume.

I believe this pre-dates the proposed Queen St rebuild - as it won't be electrified for some years a new route was needed for Cubernauld services to reach the city centre, initially this was to be via a proposed chord but now they will reverse at Springburn.

Last night for stabling, like it does every night.

But I guess you mean for passenger service, in which case not since the last major resignalling in the station area, (whenever that was), at which time it was not provided with full signalling to passenger standards.

I arrived in Platform 5 at Southampton about 4 years ago on a 158 from Bristol Temple Meads. The station was closed due to a fatality on platform 3 and we were herded out the back doors and on to a bus.

Platform 1 at Hull certainly was used by passenger trains, but has not been for many years. I remember boarding stopping trains to York from Platform 1, probably in the late 80s.

There's the remains of an old platform south of Wimbledon station on the up slow line. It's well before the current station, just before the line goes under the road bridge/car park. Is this a remnant of the original Wimbledon station - which I understand was not in the same location as the current one - or is it something more recent?

I think that's the former milk dock and was never a passenger platform.

Could be wrong, though!

I think one of the platform staff once mentioned to me that there was normal signalling for the route towards P5 from the main lines. That would seem logical, because it would just be one of a number of routes available from a main signal with a theatre indicator, so wouldn't have the same passenger restrictions as the outbound route.

Maybe someone knows the full details.

As far as I've noticed all remaining platforms at Skegness have their signage. 1 is no longer on this plane of existence, 2 and 7 are I think formally out of use but still have track, 5 and 6 have a daylight only restriction due to no lighting and 3 and 4 are used most regularly interchangeably.

Newport used to have bay platforms at both ends of what is now platform one.

However, they were not, as far as I know, for passenger use. The east end bay was, I think, the fish dock, and the (two?) at the west end were the parcels dock(s).

They used to use the west end dock(s) for the circus trains which brought all the equipment (animals and all!) into Newport. There was a separate entrance out on to the main road (Station Approach / Cambrian Road) and the circus used to parade through the town from the station to (normally) Shaftsbury Park.

The west end dock(s) were removed when Queensway was built in the
1970's. I think that there's still a trace of the east end dock, but there's no track there now.

:)

Platform 3 at Whitehaven is unused, I seem to remember that it is still signed, will check when I next travel.
If it is signed then it does seem a bit odd as I am sure there is no track and I certainly don't fancy getting my pickaxe out in order to reopen the subway!
Actually these days as the trains tend to run right through (Mon-Sat anyway) then Platform 1 doesn't get a lot of use.

As far as I can tell Salisbury's Platform 1 is unused, although the track is used by freight trains and shuffling units around, and bay platform 5 is used to store a FGW 158 set.

Andover has a platform to the north not used (although some locals wants to put a steam service to Ludgershall using the part of the M&SWJR currently used by the odd MOD train), plus an unused bay platform on the east side (left-over from Beeching)

Basingstoke has a left-over platform on the West-side, from when platform 5 was a through platform?, bay platform 5 remains on the east (for the Reading local service)

On the subject of Wimbledon, when did the National rail end of platform 10 last see passenger use?

Still work going on country end of Norwood Junction. I am guessing sidings are going in there? Still makes me wonder why work to electrify and reopen Platform 7 has been cancelled. There are large chunks of track still piled up London end on approach to Platforms 5 & 6 which must have been laid there ready to put in.

The work to the country side of Norwood is due to the replacement of the road bridge across the track. Not sure if any work will be done to the tracks during that time though.

Loads of weeds etc taken up, ballast etc put down. Looks to me as though extra sidings are being put in to be honest. Especially as there are still PLSs and Stop Boards out there from years ago.

Hmm... In that case,I have no idea.

Where are the 387s being delivered? If they go to Southern before being handed over to FCC, then probably more space for units? (/speculation)

I think that the 387s are going to lovers walk in Brighton

Indeed... I can't imagine they would want to leave their lovely new trains out somewhere like Norwood where some local scroats will probably get to them and graffiti them.

Will there have to be some re-jigging of stock for the 387s to be based at Lovers Walk or is there room? If stock did have to change I'd imagine the 313s would stay as they're works down there on coastway services.

Not a clue. I have never been down to Lovers Walk, only past it a few times. The 313s could be replaced by 377/3s, but they are used a fair bit for forming 10 car sets up here at the moment.

I am sure more will become clear come May when the winning TSGN bidder is announced.

Yeah the 313s will probably leave the coast way services when the main southern franchise regains its 377s from Thameslink.
