From the original post on this thread 7th Jan 2015....." The overall cost is set at £1.3 billion (original estimate £0.9 billion)". But there have been significant changes in delivery (or non delivery) since that time and, of course Carillion was the original contractor and they went bust!

Network Rail probably hasn't mentioned it because they set the budget so high that even being "under budget" would still look ruinously expensive.

I’d be interested to know whether this statement is based on anything other than a dogmatic ideological position that everything the railway does is automatically too expensive.

It seems that you’ll criticise budget overruns (perhaps rightly) but then, if budgets are met, you’ll default to saying the budget was too high in the first place!

Did that change before work commenced? The consensus from those in the know appears to be that this section has been in time/on budget.

While I understand your point, for any given budget I'd rather they come in under budget rather than over!

I think the present team, who have delivered the Kettering to Wigston electrification have done a really good job and I hope they are now authorised to get the section North of Leicester started. They have had to cope with the original contractor going bust, Mr Grayling pausing, stopping and then restarting it, Covid and all that that entailed - Yet they still kept to what they said they could deliver....Well Done!

Indeed. Credit where credit is due.

The first Class 810 movement up the Midland to StP and back is scheduled for Wednesday overnight - post quoted from the associated rolling stock thread.

Night time testing and a first run the MML this week, shiny new boards (covered over ) have appeared near [London] gateway services in both directions. Could be class 810 pan down and up boards.

Old Dalby to St Pancras

St Pancras to Old Dalby

OLE125 works south of Luton are still few and far between for the time being, though the new boards were clearly added during last weekend's possession.

Just to confirm there is still no Catenary or contact wires around the Braybrooke supply site. The Three Arches (Ex) bridge site is now almost clear of construction/demolition activity.

Siemens were beavering away at the TSC site near Wigston earlier although cables still to be terminated on structures but easily deliverable for the July energisation.

Confirmed Phil, about half a mile to do x 2, does anyone know how long that would take to do? Presumably some time before the big switch on in July. Obviously.

NRs High Output train is supposed to be able to do about a mile in an overnight possession.

I suspect next weekend's possession through Market Harborough would suffice. Plus overnight snagging as needed.

Energisation is still scheduled for 28th July. Also today is the 1 year anniversary since Derby ECR went live.
From Network Rail

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
description
From Sunday 28th July 2024 the power will be switched on in your area.

This means there will be 25,000 volts running along the line at all times.

Yes all the infrastructure is there, they "just" need to swing the insulators through 90 degrees and put the catenary and contact wires up.

I assume the DATS OLE test train will be making an appearance again once the OLE is live?
I actually don't know. From memory, the train was formed of 8 MK3a coaches (mainly from the 'Pretendolino'), top-and-tailed by 2 ex-EMR 43s (43054, which might need heavy repairs at Crewe, and 43066, currently squirrelled away in Nemesis Rail's sidings at Burton) and 2 ex-LNER 91s (91122 & 91128; both since scrapped).
91117 & 91120 could also be possible candidates in lieu of the scrapped pair, but I've no idea what coaches will be used.

On July 28th, how will the process work on the day. Will they have gangs between Wigston and Kettering with testing equipment, to make sure the current is flowing through, or will they send out a test loco with its pan up.

It means it should be treated as live from that date, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be. They will send a test train along sometime after that date, assuming nothing has gone bang in the meantime

That version of the DATS train is longs gone and won't be coming back. I believe DATS have lost the contract too. 054 is owned by LSL and will be used for spares, not sure on the ownership of 066 at this present time though. The ex 125group vehicles and most of the ex Pretendolino vehicles have since been sold on too, mostly to Eastern Rail Services or for private use etc. So if anything does come back, it certainly won't be in the form we've seen in the past.

The dats train was made up to ensure the principle of a 3 pantograph train over the 240m length to simulate 3 x 360's . That can now be done using the 360's.
