The Metro station itself remains open until well after the last train of the night - the issue is access from the mainline station. In all due respect, if East Coast decide that they want to close the route from the Metro station onto their concourse, they have every right to do so.

If you are sending a letter, the reply will probably state that passengers who need step free access from street to platform should go to Monument.

And if they come back with that response, give me a shout and I will give them both barrels. ;)

Write to Metro and East Coast at the same time and advise them both that you have contact them.

If you do get any response, please get in touch and I will advise on any further action.

Well that depends on the legal agreements which were signed by BR and the PTE at the time the Metro station entrance was constructed.

No doubt there'll be a get-out clause attached where the mainline station operator has the right to close the station for operational reasons I bet. Don't get me wrong, the situation is not great - what really is needed is a small entrance from the taxi rank to the lift area without having to go through the main doors of the station, but this probably cannot be done due to the listed building status.

I hope you're wrong. But this seems the sort of reply that they may give. Totally against the Equality Act mind.

Surely, if that is the case then there should be some publicity to make disabled passengers (or anyone else) who require a lift aware that this may be an issue if they plan on travelling after a certain time? It would also be against equality surely?

I will be sending my letter off tomorrow to both East Coast and Metro. Metro tend to be good at investigating things like this. Should I also send it to Nexus/TWPTE or would that be too many as I would imagine Metro would alert Nexus to the problem as well as the PTE?

Don't think it contravenes the Equality Act as there is suitable provision at other local stations i.e. Monument. The same happens when there is a lift out of service due to a fault or maintenace - they will advise you to use the next station on the line with facilities.

Monument is a heck of a hike from Central if you're disabled! I wouldn't be happy being told to walk to the next station because this one had been closed to prevent access to vagrants, especially if I'd already bought a ticket! And I'm relatively young and healthy. Would you?

That's what you'd be forced to do if there was planned/unplanned maintenance on the lift at Central. Certainly the Metro is a lot more accessible compared to other systems (London Underground being a prime example).

But planned/unplanned maintenance would be published somewhere. The Nexus website for example will say the lift is out of service due a fault, or is undergoing maintenance.

Just closing it because they want to stop any nasty's from entering isn't fair or it needs to be publicised to tell people to use an alternative station due to the fact that the entrance will close at a certain time for those who wish to use the lift at Central.

I do agree that the Metro is accessible, in fact is one of the best in terms of accessibility in this country!

That assumes Metro is aware that East Coast is closing the doors to the mainline station. markydh's post suggests that they are not.
