I also used to use the WBQ-LIV service on occasion but latterly it was used by very few passengers. From Earlestown into Liverpool Merseyside cheap fares kicked in and loadings were good.
A return of the service to Victoria/Stalybridge would reinstate the direct service which was lost when the line was being prepared for electrification prior to 2015.

Yes may be a frequent service on the CLC line to / from Warrington Central (#) but neither use or ornament to the people who live on the Chat Moss line which has a wide catchment area.

(#) Since the new timetable, not all Northern Trains stop at every station now, for some stations it has gone back to an hourly service again!

True, but the issue still remains, an one hourly service on the Chat Moss line so defeats the object of the exercise. In the past I had used the WBQ train to / from Liverpool Area as it was useful for a number of reasons, even used the half hour L&M service at that time for photography purposes at various stations but these days I use my car instead!
I don't use St Helens Junction anymore...even though it is literally 5 mins walk from my front door.

Rather use my car and drive 10 mins to St Helens Central. Its a complete waste of petrol, but at least I know I'll be guaranteed a seat AND that the train won't be crush-loaded during my journey.

Warrington makes sense I suppose as a termination point for operational reasons, but I am not surprised loadings at Warrington were poor, when the Central-Liverpool service is mostly faster and definitely more frequent.

I'd imagine that the works are almost entirely motivated by the need to accommodate pairs of 323s which do not feature SDO for Manchester Airport to Liverpool Lime Street services.

And yet Mid-Cheshire and Southport lines can't get platform extensions for the length of formation that has been in place for years.

Nothing to do with Class 323's, it is connected to the Trans-Pennine trains, as they use both stations. There are other stations on the L&M line that cannot accommodate a pair of Class 323's including my local station, Whiston.

Lea Green platform extensions are due to be completed at the end of November.
See this thread were the Mod kindly moved my images over of Lea Green Station platform extensions thinking it was speculative discussion yet members have reference to Lea Green Station on this thread.

May of been better retitled this thread to include both Lea Green and Newton le Willow stations as the work is related to each station. Sorry.

Think it's definitely fair to say that the service provided by Northern has become atrocious since being brought under OLR control.

With the works at Lea Green looking like they have been completed how far behind is Newton-Le-Willows? as they looked nowhere near complete the last time I saw them.

Issues with the platform extensions potentially getting in the way of point work required for the proposed Parkside freight terminal from what I hear. I think some re-design is happening.
