in my last thread on nuclear trains a link was posted 'real time trains' & having got the times for freight on monday & wedensday, i set about to record them on monday no trains apperaed , guessing that they were either late or the times had changed i went on the site monday night & they were still there & the same time. so today i set about again to record the train & again having stood on a embankment on the irish sea, i waited with my tripod to see them & still they didnt appear so i worked my along to the station & asked a memer of staff if any freight was due & turned out there wasnt to my disapointment yet i had got the times from the site so has any one else had this problem or not

Real Time Trains will show you what booked paths there are. Not all of these paths will be used.

RTT will show services that are in the timetable plan first and foremost. It's likely these that you saw. Many of the freight services in the plan rarely run, and will likely be marked as runs as required.

For a good gauge of whether a train will run, click on its identity/FRGT and then you will get the schedule detail. In the top info band, there's a bit which says 'Realtime Information'. If this is there, and the activation time wasn't exactly an hour or two before the departure time, then there is a good chance that it is running. If not, then not.

I think it's been mentioned before that the site shows what slots (I'm sure there is a technical term for them) have been reserved. As to whether or not those reserved slots get used is a different matter.

But what are these nuclear trains of which you speak? Is the nuclear energy used to generate steam for traditional steam traction or to drive a generator/alternator set for electric traction?

EDIT: Ooooh, get those folk who can type quicker than me :)

I gather from the other thread that you don't live a million miles away from where you're hoping to film them - so not only can you check whether it's actually running (RTT will show, with times in bold (?), the actual reported times at each location), but also whether it's in its booked path or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were not various potential paths for the Flask trains, with a random selection made shortly before departure.

Unlike passenger trains, the vast majority of freight services run 'as required',
often on different days from one week to the next!

However, I gave a detailed reply to your original question,
giving times of the (very few) freights which run through
Harrington, which can be summed up as follows:

6C22 Carlisle to Sellafield (Harrington 08:05) - runs Wednesday or Friday, as required
6M60 Torness to Sellafield (Harrington 17:00) - runs Fridays, as required
6M22 Hunterston to Sellafield (Harrington 19:35) - runs Tuesday or Wednesday, as required
6C46 Sellafield to Carlisle (Harrington 20:20) - runs as required Monday to Thursday

Of the above, the Hunterston train (6M22) ran on Tuesday this week,
rather than the more usual Wednesday, but the main evening train (6C46)
ran on both Monday (Hunterston traffic) and Tuesday (Georgemas traffic),
so the trains do run - even if the days are not totally predicatable!

...i worked my along to the station & asked a memer of staff if any freight was due & turned out there wasnt to my disapointment yet i had got the times from the site so has any one else had this problem or not
RTT is a fantastic tool for finding out on the day if a particular train
is running or not, but if you want to run what is likely to run in the
future, especially on quieter, secondary routes, you need to find
someone like me with 'local knowledge' to ask... :)

If you're reading this soon after I've posted, then following this link: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U51922/2013/05/01/advanced will show you a train that passed your way today. The information in the "Realtime" column shows the time that the train reached the timing point in bold, and how early (negative number of minutes), late (positive number of minutes) or right time (RT). The remaining non-bold times in the column are an extrapolation of when the system thinks the train will arrive at the remaining timing points.

You can see that the times for certain points are not always recorded - these have "No report" against them. Beware of this - "No report" does not appear until after the next successful timing report. Just because the train appears to have "stopped" some distance away doesn't mean it actually has! I nearly got caught out by this with a test train last week.
