Northern's first three car 158 has gone live today.

http://jst.fotopic.net/p48012082.html

158758 now contains 58714, formerly of 158814. Therefore formation is 52758+58714+57758. 758's cars are in full Northern livery with internal livery, 58714 is in plain blue but remains untouched internally.

Could really do with one of these over this way for peak times, the peak departures from Bridlington/Beverley towards Hull are always wedged!

I hear though that they will probably remain on York-Blackpool services. Maybe the diagrams could be worked so that a 3 car 158 could work Blackpool-York, then the 1612 York-Scarborough via Hull (always wedged after Hull), to work back the following morning on the 0653 Scarborough-Hull (terminating at Hull instead of running on to Doncaster), then form the 0900 Hull-York ready for a York-Blackpool service.

This would certainly ease overcrowding on those busiest trains.

I imagine there will be at only 6 of the 8 sets on Blackpools every day at maximum with the other two elsewhere or on maintenance. Not every diagram demands a 3 car set plus the 153's could also be used.

There were 2 centre cars in blue livery on Neville Hill today, so I would expect more 3-car sets to be appearing in the next few days.

With regard to diagrams, the York-Blackpool circuit requires 7 sets. I think one of the problems of doing what Max suggested (taking a unit off a Blackpool-York to do the 16.12 to Hull & Scarboro), is what would do the 16.13 York-Blackpool? This service is no doubt also extremely packed, particularly after Leeds (at 16.51) and Bradford (17.14) - right in the middle of the evening peak.

IIRC the 1613 York to Blackpool is one of a couple of services which picks up a 153 at Leeds (along with 1715 Leeds - Selby (from Wakefield via Hudders).

From my experiences, the 16:13 York-Blackpool is always wedged Leeds-Halifax, were loadings ease off. It is normally 2-car 158 throughout, I would imagine this will become 3-car. As for other services, within W Yorks, not all services on the route require a 3-car set.

For a start I'm not sure these diagrams will neccessarily demand a 3 car set:
