They're getting them at the same time as the rest of the "digital mods", but you wouldn't know unless you specifically look for them! If I recall correctly, there's one at each end of each driving car, and at one end of the centre car (the accessible toilet gets in the way at the other end), and from the vast majority of seats, none are visible. Not sure if it’s already been reported, but 323234 now has USB sockets, new CCTV and passenger counters fitted as well. Are 323s going to get digital poster boards eventually?
UK train operator, Northern, has marked National Engineering Day (2 November) with the completion of its first ‘Intelligent Train’ makeover, which now features technology made famous by NASA. National Engineering Day is a Royal Academy of Engineering-led initiative that aims to make the UK’s engineers and engineering more visible and celebrate how their work improves everyday lives and shapes the world around us.
The Class 150 Unit has been fitted with LIDAR horizon scanning cameras – the same used by NASA to map the surface of the moon – a radar dome, 180-degree thermal imaging software, acoustic monitors, a G-Shock Bogie and an AI camera.
This is the operator’s ‘proof of concept’ train and one of Northern’s fleet of 345 trains to be armed with the new technology, which is designed to make journeys by railway safer and more efficient.
A smarter way of working
The train is set to operate services across the Northern network, including Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Yorkshire, for the next three months. Data captured during this trial will inform the roll-out of the Intelligent Trains programme and support the business case for the scheme.
“This is an exciting moment for all of us here at Northern,” explains Jack Commandeur, Engineering Director at Northern. “Our ‘Intelligent Trains’ won’t just travel the network, they will actively monitor and report back on issues that could have an impact on our operation. The result will be greater efficiencies in terms of resource allocation, faster responses in terms of maintenance programmes and an overall smarter – and safer – way of working.”
The ‘Intelligent Trains’ makeover took place at Northern’s TrainCare Centre in Newton Heath, Greater Manchester.
Northern‘s The ‘Intelligent Trains’ programme is being delivered in partnership with Network Rail, Belvoir Rail, Yellow Rail and Modux.
Well, there's a new candidate for the "Ugliest Trains" discussion that comes along every few years!Keep an eye out for 150136 - it will be sporting some trial equipment for a little while.

It's just there for digital train mods (USB, CCTV etc).Out of curiosity, what's the story of the 155 there? Assuming the photo was taken at Newton Heath as the article suggests. Didn't think 155s would get to that side of the hills these days.
Thanks. It's just there for digital train mods (USB, CCTV etc).
Came back into service on 10/11.155344 is now fitted with wifi, screens and USB ports. Seen at York tonight.
It's finished, and did so over a year ago.Does this programme win the slowest train return programme in history award yet? The pace is unbelievably slow, especially considering how important a job it is with the dreadful state of Northern’s BR legacy fleet.

The only units left to be treated with a refresh are the ex Greater Anglia/East Midlands units. No doubt the DfT will try and keep them in their current state for as long as they can. It's finished, and did so over a year ago.
These latest mods are simply to add features such as USB and additional screens - there is no further refurbishment to other passenger facilities.
Erm, no...With that equipment on the front, 150136 could be either a partner unit for 950001 or converted to another track recording unit and numbered 950002
950001 of course having never run in passenger service, being notable as one of the only purpose built departmental units not converted from redundant passenger stock when it was specially added onto the end of the original 150/1 order.Erm, no...
It's simply a trial. The aim is to get the tech small enough that it can be on the front of passenger units. There are no plans whatsoever for it to be 'converted' to a track recording unit or leave passenger service. In a few weeks the kit will be removed and it'll be back to normal for a 150/1.
Yes.Is 155343 in for mods has it's the only 155 I need to complete my set.
Thanks, knowing my luck, next time it's out the trains would probably go on strike again.Yes.
Should hopefully be back out on the 12th, though that's subject to change. Thanks, knowing my luck, next time it's out the trains would probably go on strike again.
Neville Hill move showing for Monday, with one coming the other way too. Can’t be many more left to do now…Should hopefully be back out on the 12th, though that's subject to change.
Happened a while back. 150003 ~ 150006. Can’t remember which way round it is, but they’re formed of 150223 and 150209 for centre cars, 150112/116/117/147 for driving cars.Might deserve a seperate thread, has Northern decided to form a few three car hybrid class 150's? As I've seen 150005 and 150006 both of which have the centre coaches from unit 150223.
Been like that a few years now. 150001/002 are the prototypes with 150003-006 formed of 2 car units including the orphan pair 57209/212 now formed in 003/004 and 150223 split to form 005/006.Might deserve a seperate thread, has Northern decided to form a few three car hybrid class 150's? Was going to ask what's the best route for 003-006 now they have moved, Ive only got a handful of 150/1s (003 & 006 having the 150/1s I require.)Been like that a few years now. 150001/002 are the prototypes with 150003-006 formed of 2 car units including the orphan pair 57209/212 now formed in 003/004 and 150223 split to form 005/006.
Originally based at Newton Heath for Rochdale - Clitheroe services but transferred to Neville Hill in December with 3 diagrams on the Penistone line and 2 on the Dearne Valley line allowing rotation back to Neville Hill every 6 days.
Huddersfield to Sheffield is best bet.Was going to ask what's the best route for 003-006 now they have moved, Ive only got a handful of 150/1s (003 & 006 having the 150/1s I require.)
Will Northern be reforming any more class 150's into three car hybrids or will 003-006 be the only ones?Been like that a few years now. 150001/002 are the prototypes with 150003-006 formed of 2 car units including the orphan pair 57209/212 now formed in 003/004 and 150223 split to form 005/006.
