Slightly O/T - I've noticed more stickers being applied to the Northern 323s (none of which are refurbished yet). 'Teeth' stickers on inside and outside of doors, 'Mind the gap' on inside and outside of doors (the one inside is hidden when the door is open, somewhat limiting its effectiveness), and 2? new stickers for the bins - one on the flap, and one above pointing at the flap.

Most Neville Hill based units have been fitted with these 'teeth'

I don't think they'll be refurbished at all, as they're all leaving.

155346 still has not returned from Kilmarnock yet, almost 12 months now...

I bet they've realized that once they finished scraping all the rust out, there was no metal left!

319369 returned to Allerton from Wolverton today. Strangely it is unbranded when the one that went to Brush a week or so ago was fully branded.

The full livery is currently being applied to units that are "refurbished" (or, more accurately, part-refurbished or "refreshed"). The units Northern already had are just getting new PRM mods, like the diesel units having the same work but returning in a fresh coat of unbranded Northern Rail livery.

Apart from the 156s which appear to have had nearly no interior work bar the PRM mods but are coming out in the full new livery.

155 away for a year

Sitting in the railway themed cafe at Sowerby Bridge the other day I wa struck by the procession of 155's and 153's with rust streaks around the cantrail. Probably uneconomic to repair so the 155 May be unique

Just out of intrest , why is one of the 333s stored OOU ? Dont they operate on one of the busiest commuter lines on Northern routes ?

Also , does anyone have any pictures of the stored unit ? Hope it hasnt ended up like the South Harrow " stored " 1983 stock !

333s can't run doubled up due to a lack of 190m platforms or SDO so presumably Northern decided using the 16th as spare parts reduces the chance of another one failing.

333's maintained by Siemens who presumably can supply enough units without it.
Used as a 'Christmas tree" for spare parts. Currently in the process of being returned to service.
Not sure who maintains the 322's used at peak times on the aire valley lines

333009 I did hear was not far away from being ready to run out if its not doing already. Another problem is 333s don't much like coupling to each other at all. If they do run in 8 car the trailing set is usually run powered down. Computers don't much like each other!

Any indication as to when the 170's on the list are likely to appear or if they will be refreshed before entering service at ??? Depot.

Next year, by I think September, is what the franchise agreement says. I guess they'll be moving to refurbishment whenever Scotrail releases them, probably pending the 385s entering service.

With all the discussion of seats on several threads, I actually now hope that the refurbished 158s do NOT have new seats fitted at a later date- the new cushions on the original seats are excellent and possibly the comfiest seats I've encountered on a train since the declassified 1st on an ex-MML 170. None of the new seats currently available seem to come close.

Glasgow Edinburgh goes live 30th May 17 and I here the 170's have been de branded so may be sooner.

Interesting, as you'd asusme they'd have similar software to the Heathrow Express 332's which regularly run in pairs. I heard from a Northern employee that 333009 was also having some door attention which may be rolled out to the rest of the fleet. Something to do with improving reliability.

I'd be fairly certain the 170's will be based at Neville Hill seeing as they'll be working mainly on the Harrogate loop?

Actually I just checked the franchise agreement and it says 1 July 2018, not September. I assume Northern will want some work done with them, but maybe just some vinyls will do?

Besides, the Scotrail franchise agreement has them hanging around until at least December. I'm guessing they want to use them until the 385s start relieving the 380s?

Are those the ones with the really high, firm cushions? If so, they're comfortable enough but, being so high, the arm rests are rendered too low. I expect the cushions will collapse in time.

Northern fitting those 'teeth' to the doors looks really poor. They should put more effort into maintaining their 15x units which have had some really embarrassing failures over the last 12 months that could easily be attributed due to the lack of due care with maintenance planning. Whilst society is perhaps more dumbed down than it was some decades back surely people can understand the function of a public transport door?!

Have the RAIB said the teeth have to be added? They did with the Desiros after a passenger tried to get on as the doors were closing, got stuck in the doors and the guard didn't notice before giving the green light to go.

How can a guard not notice? Was it a curved platform? Even if it was though the rule book is quite clear on the obligation of the guard in this aspect.

Said guard no longer works for the company. I'll say no more.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
I have my doubts the 170s will be with Northern next summer, Scotrails refurbishment is running behind, the HSTs will most likely be late if Im any judge and the DMU fleat is at full stretch so I think they will be unreliable when they do move.

I thought they were to work Calder Valley? They will be hopeless on the loop due to acceleration

The way things are going in the south, it wouldn't surprise me if the 150/1s from GWR will be delayed too. Still, they will be the next thing GWR can release after the 180s as I believe they're keeping the 153s and 143s to cover the shortfall, some possibly well into 2019. However the internal condition of the 150/1s are poor and also all need mods...
