People are weird. I spent Christmas, New Year and my dads 65th in Chile and Peru in 2011/12 and they got over it. I went to Poland for my 41st and forgave the family for not coming with me. It really gets me down that people need the "markets" to tell them when to care about their family. "We are selling cards and discounted goods for this day, if you aren't with your loved ones you are a failure, who gives a sh*t about Jesus".

And to be fair, I don't think you've got anything to forgive them for in that respect. It seems a lot to expect people to go abroad to fit in with one's plans.

Of course not mate. I never felt that I did and I didn't expect them to come with me. In fact I asked if they minded me flying off to Poland on the day of my birthday. They didn't mind of course. I didn't go because it was my birthday, just because a few mates were going and I fancied it. On the evening we arrived a mate mentioned we hadn't done anything special for my birthday. I'd forgotten all about it. Ha ha. It is just another day really and in my opinion you should make the most of every day whatever comes your way.

Just a quick question; why have you chosen to share this with forum members? And what's with the "eek" at the end of the sentence? Just curious that's all.

people on forums tend to be more open/honest. i appreciate the people one here aren't a true representation of the population at large. I'm not going to discuss personal/domestic issues with work colleagues.

btw I'm not a member of any other forums. only look at mumsnet, wrongplanet, moneysupermrket (?) digitalspy if they come up on a google search.

All that over not going home for Christmas? If that's the case you're better off without contact.

i agree with you. nobody else gave me the cold shoulder. a couple texted me just to check where i was, but didn't block me!

I should imagine there is quite a large number of people in Britain who actually do what you say at the end of your posting (but phrased in more polite language). I agree that religion tends to mean less to a large number of "so-called Christians (in name only)" in Britain but the horrors that have recently been perpetrated by ISIL in the name of their extreme Wahaabist version of Islam, shows that religion in the world as a whole has not gone away, much as those "liberals" in Britain would like to happen.

Apologies for the harsh language Paul.

Why bring politics into this? It is a simple question of whom one would like to spend time with.
