Numbers on bricks in old railway tunnels - what do they signify?

They will be some sort of marker, often used for inspections to split the tunnel up into segments.

Could you give an idea how far apart they are and whether each one is close to a refuge? This would most likely confirm whether they were chainage markers or refuge markers.

Similar markers were used in the past to mark where a repair was made.

Near where the 3 ridings meet
Probably Tablet markers.
Similar to Chainages but not as far apart and not standard between different tunnels.
I have a couple of tunnel diagrams including Standedge, will see if I can dig one out.
